Year 6 W/B: 28/9/15

Date: 3rd Oct 2015 @ 9:11pm

The children have been working incredibly hard this week and their hard work is really paying off.

In maths we have been looking at multiplication and the children are able to use the grid method and efficient method for multiplying numbers including decimals by single digits. Some children also looked at long multiplication for multiplying by 2 and 3 digit numbers. This has used skills we have worked on previously such as place value and times tables. Some children still find times tables tricky or can't recall them as quickly as they would like. We will continue to work on this in school, but extra practice at home really makes a difference. Next week we will be revising our knowledge of 2d and 3d shapes and drawing nets for a range of shapes including cubes, cuboids, prisms and pyramids. I will also be encouraging children to apply their tables knowledge to division questions during starter activities. I have added a challenge to try at home for any children who would like to have a go.

In English we have been helping reception find ways to keep the princess warm. Our stimulus is a book called 'The Princess Blankets', a rather dark fairy tale. We have written letters to 'the King' with suggestions for keeping his daughter warm and to demand a meeting with him. It has been an absolute delight to read the work children have written throughout the week. They have all shown that they have wonderful imaginations and are no doubt enthused by the thought of helping reception. The suggestions so far include: retrieving fireworms from a far flung island; defeating the fire gods of Mount Scorch; and finding a magician with the secrets of the sun. I will be adding a selection of work to the website over the coming weeks. To further this work at home children could try writing a letter; perhaps to a friend or relative or for those with younger siblings, they could write a letter from the tooth fairy!

Children are also continuing to enjoy their topic on the turning points in British history 'Plot, War and Revolution'. So far we have covered the Battle of Hastings,  the signing of the Magna Carta, the Gunpowder Plot and the defeat of the Spanish Armada. This week children made their own boat for a race, unfortunately it seemed they were as successful as the Spanish Armada and most sank. However, the children had lots of fun and were able to talk about this point in British history with confidence.
