Schemes we use:

Power Maths

At Brereton, we use Power Maths as a basis of our maths lesson. This is an exciting class mastery approach, which has been recommended by the DfE, that works for every child.  It is based upon the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach.

Every lesson is divided into sections that involve plenty of discovery, sharing, collaboration, practice and reflection. Children are encouraged to solve problems each day through the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract thinking.

At the heart of this programme is the idea that all children can achieve and be successful mathematicians with the right growth mindset.

Times Table Rock Stars

Children from Y2-6 are provided with a Times Table Rock Stars log in.  Children find TTRS very engaging and they are keen to practice and earn points, with which they can purchase items for their rock star.

Read Write Inc Phonics

In EYFS and KS1 we use Read, Write Inc to teach Phonics.  You can find more information on how to help your child with Phonics in our FAQs section.

Parents Guide to RWI

Read Write Inc Spelling

Once children have completed Read Write Inc Phonics, they progress to Read Write Inc Spelling.  Each spelling rule is introduced by a video and the children then complete tasks in their workbooks.  Each unit lasts for five lessons.  A spelling test is given at the end of each half term.

Talk 4 Writing

T4W is a unique process that uses spoken activities to develop writing skills. Quality writing is created by first expanding and developing students’ oral language skills and then teaching the necessary steps for exceptional sentence, paragraph and text construction.

About T4W

In Reception and Year 1 we use Read, Write Inc reading books, so books are closely matched to the children's phonics knowledge.

After children have progressed from Read, Write Inc, we use Accelerated Reader.  Children complete Star Reader assessments to identify their correct reading band, which helps them to choose a book to suit their reading ability and interest levels.  We have a large range of books so every child can find a book which excites them.  Once children have finished a book, they complete an on-line quiz.  This scheme allows staff to monitor indepedent reading and check comprehension skills.
