Year One begins w/b 6.09.23

And Year 1 begins……

Well what a lovely (and rather warm) start we have had to Year 1. We have seen a lot of enthusiasm, joy and an eagerness to learn and play and talk with friends. We have given the children some free choice time this week so we can observe how they play, listen and interact with each other. On top of this they have all completed some focused learning.

We have spent some of the time this week exploring our environment and playing some games together, the children have particularly enjoyed playing with the parachute and we have perfected making a class tent with us all inside.

The children have written about their holidays giving us an insight into some of the lovely things they have been doing over the summer and letting them show off all of their fantastic writing skills.

The children have brought their first reading book home as well as a ‘reading for pleasure’ book that we hope you can enjoy together. We look forward to listening to all of the children read next week.  Reading books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday,

In our first forest school session of the new year we reminded ourselves of the forest school rules and expectations before exploring the outdoor area. We played some different games to practice our listening skills, following instructions to collect different objects from around our environment. We also found some oak galls and found out about what they are and how the wasps can lay their eggs in them. It was great to be back in our forest school area.

This week we have introduced the story of the Colour Monster. It is a fantastic sorry that unpicks and identifies common emotions that we all feel. One day, Colour Monster wakes up feeling very confused. His emotions are all over the place; he feels angry, happy, calm, sad, and scared all at once! We looked at each emotion and the times we have felt those feelings before drawing and writing about our own emotions. This starting point has introduced our Colour Monster display where, each morning, we can add our named pegs to share how we are feeling: angry, happy, calm, sad, scared, loved or perhaps a confused mix of many emotions just like the Colour Monster. We have also created some of our own colour monsters thinking about what colour we would choose to draw our monster and what makes those feelings, we then used our work to create our own class book.

We also began our new Science learning all about trees. We went on a walk around our school grounds to see if we could identify any of the trees and the children were very enthusiastic to tell us all of the things they already know about trees.

We hope you will all now enjoy a lovely weekend and the photos are but a snapshot of our first 3 days together in Year One.
