Year 6 Next Half Term

Date: 30th Oct 2015 @ 8:45pm

I hope you have all enjoyed the half term holiday. It was lovely to see you all again during parent consultations and I was pleased to hear how enthusiastic the children are to continue their learning at home.

I hope you find the following information useful in supporting children. If you do have any questions, please ask or write a note in your child's planner.

English

This half term we will be completing work based on the book 'King Kong' by Anthony Browne. Children will be developing their writing skills throughout the unit, but the main written outcome will be a newspaper article detailing the events. To support this work, children could try writing headlines for community events or captions for photographs.

Writing regularly and for a range of purposes will also help to build children's confidence. Encouraging them to write a diary entry for an interesting day out or a letter to a family member is also helpful.

Reading newspapers will also help children to build an understanding of the genre and give them ideas for their own writing. The children's newspaper 'First News' can be purchased from W H Smith or click on the link below to read extracts  and up to date articles online.

All children are reading every day at school, but reading regularly at home is also important. I have emphasized this message with children and asked them to try to read a range of texts including fiction and non-fiction.

Maths

During the next few weeks we will be working on fractions, percentages and ratio and proportion.

Although we began work on ratio and proportion last year, many children will feel less confident with this topic. Click on the links below to try some of the problems we will be working on. The problems we are using in class are slightly different so please feel free to let children try these at home.

Topic

We will be continuing our work on turning points in British history. We will be focusing mainly on WW2 through the eyes of children. We will be taking some inspiration from the book 'Rose Blanche' by Ian McEwan which follows Rose, a young girl who watches her town change as war begins.

We will also be continuing our exciting work on The Beatles and Pop Art. I am sure everyone is looking forward to our visit to the Beatles Story in Liverpool. The visit is scheduled for Friday 6th November. Unusually, we are aiming to leave school as close to 8:30 am as possible. This is to ensure we arrive in good time for our tour. On this day Year 6 children should come straight into school and meet me in the classroom, Mrs Taylor will meet children arriving on the school bus and bring them straight to the classroom. If you are running late on this day, or your child is ill and will not be attending, please call the school office as soon as possible to let us know. We are asking children to wear their usual school uniform and bring a waterproof coat (we do have a 20 minute walk outside between sites). All children will need a packed lunch, but these can be ordered from school if you prefer. Following my pre-visit last weekend, I am certain the children will have a wonderful day and we look forward to sharing the experience with you in our class assembly on Friday 13th November.

I hope this information is useful,
