Year 5 WC 15th April

Date: 20th Apr 2024 @ 11:03am

Welcome back to the summer term. We hope you've all had a wonderful Easter. Mr Cotton and I have been very pleased with the positive attitude children have demonstrated this week and we're really looking forward to our final term in Year 5.

In Maths this week, we have finished our unit on area and perimeter by looking at the area of compound shapes. We have also been working on some problem solving questions discussing how we can approach a problem to work out what we need to do. Then we have started our new unit on graphs where we have been drawing and interpreting line graphs. We'll continue use our First Things First time (between 8:35-9) to recap on previous learning from the year, focusing on fluency of the four operations, fractions and decimals.

In English we have started our new text, King Kong. On Tuesday we went on an adventure to Mongolia where we found a giant footprint- which turned out to belong to King Kong. As expected, the children had some great predictions about what our story was going to be about. We have since been using illustrations from the book to create expanded noun phrases and today we have written a list poem using similes and metaphors.

On Tuesday we launched our new Young Leaders project. The children were introduced to what the programme is about and we saw some of the community projects that other schools around the country had completed. Then we discussed what makes a good leader and what it means to 'be the change you want to see'.

On Thursday, Barry from Walk Through The Bible visited Year 5. He'll be working with us every week until half term teaching the children the Old Testament using role play and actions to remember the stories.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.
