Year 3 WC 4th December 2017

Date: 10th Dec 2017 @ 8:58pm

What a busy week we have had in Year 3 and there is now sign of us slowing down as we have our Christmas service to prepare for next.

We started our week with Incarnation morning on Monday. We started by learning all about advent and how it is important to Christians. We learnt all about the advent wreath and what each candle means.

In maths we have been continuing to work on times tables, focusing particularly on the 8 times table and consolidating all the work we have done on the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables. You might recognise some of these types of problems that we have been solving:

heartheartheartheart = 32

coolcoolcool = 21

devildevildevildevildevil devil= 12

heartcool + devil = ?

In English we have been using the text 'The Best Christmas Present in the World' by Michael Morpurgo and Sainsbury's advert from 2014 telling The Christmas Truce, to inspire our writing. We wrote setting descriptions of the trenches on that crisp Christmas morning and then we imagined we were one of the soldiers writing a letter back home to describe the football game. The children have worked really hard on improving their vocabulary and are becoming more confident in using thesauruses to find better words. We also encourage them to 'magpie' words and phrases they hear in their reading books and our class novel. If children come across a word or phrase in their reading at home, please encourage them to write these in their planner so they can transfer them to their Magpie books at school.

In topic we have been learning about Queen Cleopatra. We used drama to tell the story of her life, finding out all about her rule as Pharaoh of Egypt and how, after learning about the death of her husband, Marc Anthony, she was so heartbroken she supposedly allowed a poisonous cobra to bite her. Following this, the children began to write newspaper reports about her death.
