What a fantastic week of learning we have had!

In English this week, we have been working hard on planning and writing our letter to Tom. In this letter, we have made sure to warn him of any potential dangers that he could face on his voyage along the river and offered him some solutions to help fix the problem. It was fantastic to see children using the commands and alliteration that they had written last week to help describe the dangers. We are looking forward to publishing our letters next week!

In geography, we have been learning all about the United Kingdom. We studied a map which helped us to discover the four countries of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), their capital cities (London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast) and their flags. We then used an atlas to locate the countries and capitals and add them to a blank UK map. As an extra challenge, some children added the surrounding seas to their maps. What phenomenal geographers we have in Year Two!

In science this week, we discovered the food pyramid which consisted of: fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, dairy, protein and fats, oils and spreads. We soon realised that foods at the bottom of the food pyramid are foods that we should eat a lot more of compared to foods at the top. Finally, we created and labelled our own food pyramid.

This week in PE, we have continued with our unit on gymnastics. Firstly, we recapped the ‘bunny hop’ from Year One, remembering that we have to jump into the crater with our hands first, then our feet. After demonstrating this with a partner, we got into small groups and chose a start balance, a way to travel and a finishing balance to end our sequence.

In maths this week, we have continued on with our unit ‘Addition and subtraction’. We have been focussing on:

  • Using known facts with 1s to determine other facts with corresponding multiples of 10.
  • Using our knowledge of number bonds to learn complements of 100; 10 + 90, 20 + 80, 30 + 70, and so on.
  • Adding and subtracting 1s to or from a 2-digit number without exchanging, using number bonds to help us.
  • Adding two single-digit numbers that total more than 10, by breaking one number into two parts to bridge the 10.
  • Adding two single-digit numbers by bridging 10.

On Wednesday it was World Mental Health Day and the theme was '‘Mental health is a universal human right' to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as a universal human right. In class we talked about ways we can look after our mental health including going for a walk, playing with friends and giving hugs to our family.

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!
