Happy New Year to you all and welcome back to a new term in Year 2!

I hope you have had a healthy and happy festive break. It has been a pleasure to welcome the children back to school this week; I was so pleased to see everybody. Our week began with an exciting and intriguing discovery, we discovered a number of jigsaw pieces around the classroom. We worked together to find and collect the hidden pieces before completing the jigsaw. This revealed the front cover of our new text, Jack and the Baked Beanstalk. As part of a whole class discussion, we each predicted what would happen in this story and how it may differ from the original traditional tale. We then focused on writing predictions based on the front cover of the book and our prior knowledge of traditional tales. We can’t wait to see if any of our predictions are correct! On Thursday, the first page of the book was revealed as we found out about the fast-food van owned by Jack and his mum. Our learning objective for this lesson was to practise alliteration in the form of persuasion so we created adverts for Jack’s Fast Food van to persuade people it is the best place to go and eat. Within our advertisements, we thought especially about alliteration, commas in a list and exciting adjective choices. E.g. “Come to Jack’s Fast Food van! We’ve got brilliant burgers, sensational sausages, mouth-watering milkshakes, friendly faces and welcoming waiters.”

This week in PSHE, we have been reading 'The Odd Egg.' This story is all about a group of birds who have eggs to hatch, however one duck is delighted to find her own egg to look after. Suprisingly, when this unusually large egg hatches, it turns out to be a crocodile. As a class, we discussed the meaning of ‘odd’, how the birds felt when they laid their eggs and how the duck felt when she discovered that it was a crocodile.

In maths this week, we have been very excited to start our new topic ‘Money’. We have been looking at the value of different coins and notes and selecting the right combination for a given amount. We have also used different combinations of coins and notes to make the same amount of money. For example, to make £25, we could use a £20 note and a £5 note or we could make it using two £10, two £2 and one £1. If you could keep practicing money at home where possible, that would be great!

In geography this week, we have revisited the 7 continents and 5 oceans. We have looked at where they are on a map and what the climate is like there. We then drew the equator on a map of the world. For example, we have learned that Asia has a warmer climate than Europe because it is closer to the equator.

In science this week, we recapped what we have learned about keeping our bodies healthy. We then participated in a range of exercises such as running, throwing and catching, and jumping to observe how it makes our bodies feel. After this, we found our pulse and counted how many beats we felt in 30 seconds. We all agreed that running and jumping made our heart rate increase the most!
We have moved onto our football unit in PE this week. In this lesson, we focused on controlling the ball by keeping the ball close and then stopping it with the soles of our feet.

This morning we were very excited to meet our Year Six reading buddies. In this session, we shared our favourite book with our buddy and enjoyed hearing all about theirs. We look forward to seeing them again soon.

Today we said goodbye to the wonderful Mrs Sherliker-Hewitt. We have really enjoyed having Mrs Sherliker-Hewitt in our Year Two class and she will be missed by us all. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and wish her every success for the future.

I hope you have a great weekend.
