Year 2 w/b 27th November

Date: 1st Dec 2023 @ 3:34pm

What a busy but exciting week we have had in Year Two!

Our English learning began with the introduction of a model text for a superhero narrative. We have analysed this model text, looking for examples of: conjunctions, similes, expanded noun phrases, adverbs, exclamation marks and questions. The children are becoming SPaG experts! Towards the end of our week, we started to plan our own superhero narratives, drawing on our ideas from our recent letters. We focused on including lots of ambitious vocabulary in our plans so that we remember to use this in our writing next week.

This week in maths, we have continued with our unit ‘Shape.’ We have been focusing on:

  • Exploring reflective symmetry and identifying shapes and images that have reflective symmetry and identifying where the line of symmetry lies.
  • Drawing on our learning about properties of 2D shapes in order to sort polygons by different criteria.
  • Identifying patterns involving 2D shapes. By isolating the pattern core, children have been able to identify missing terms.
  • Counting and describing the faces of 3D shapes. We learned that a curved surface on a 3D shape is not classed as a face.

In RE this week, we have been thinking about what angels look like and what angels do. We then explored lots of pictures of angels from Christian artwork including Renaissance painting, sculpture, Christmas cards and Christmas Nativity storybooks. We found ‘The Knife Angel’ particularly fascinating as it brings messages of justice, forgiveness and peace. Finally, we discussed what we think an angel looks like and drew this with our partner.

Much of our week has, once again, been dedicated to our Nativity preparations. We really look forward to welcoming you to the performance ‘Prickly Hay’ next week. The children have been working hard and the Christian Christmas retelling of that first Christmas over 2000 years ago is delivered by Key Stage One with sparkle, enthusiasm, and enjoyment.

Thank you for your continued support at home. We are really looking forward to seeing you all at the Nativity Performances on Wednesday at 2pm and 6pm.
