Year 2 w/b 26th June

Date: 29th Jun 2023 @ 1:51pm

What another busy yet lovely week we have had in Year Two!

In English, we completed our ‘analyse’ task. In the model text, we identified structures (introductory paragraph, a list of the different parts of the machine, bullet-pointed sentences and a conclusion) and language features (imperative verbs, simile, conjunctions, noun phrases for detail and positive language). We then considered the purpose of each feature – what is their effect on the reader? Next, we started to plan our very own explanation texts. We started by drawing and labelling the parts of our own inventions, which ranged from ‘The helpful homework machine’ to ‘Marvellous milkshake maker’. These machines sounded fantastic! We then created our own text maps for our invention. It was wonderful to see the children planning for each sentence to include creative ideas and ambitious vocab (planned using pictures) and conjunctions and interesting sentence openers (written as key words). We are looking forward to writing our own explanation texts next week!

In maths this week, we have continued with our ‘Statistics’ unit. We have been looking at:

  • Constructing, reading and interpreting pictograms, showing that one symbol represents one item.
  • Finding totals and comparing amounts.
  • Reading and constructing pictograms in which symbols represent more than one item (2, 5 and 10).

In science, we wanted to test the suitability of materials for a coat. We looked at a range of materials: fabric, paper, paper towels, tin foil, felt, plastic, cling film and sponge. After predicting whether these materials would be waterproof, the children then conducted an experiment, using water to test which materials would be suitable for a waterproof coat. We decided that we definitely wouldn't want to wear a coat made from sponge!

In computing, we continued with our unit ‘Online safety’. The lesson began when Miss Roxburgh shared something very special with the rest of the class, a photograph of her dogs Milo and Bailey. Miss Roxburgh then shared some interesting facts about her dogs with specific children. After this, children were asked for the photograph and information back so she could take them home. The children were able to return the photograph, however they soon realised they were unable to give back the information they had. We discussed how this is like sharing information online as even though Miss Roxburgh may have told the children information about her dogs, they still know that information and shared it with others in the class. Finally, we all agreed that somebody could feel annoyed or upset if we haven’t asked for their permission first before posting online or if we have shared information about them when they have asked us not to.

In RE, we used our art work skills to create pictures of ‘Moses in the bulrushes’ after listening to the sad story of Moses' mother putting Moses in a basket when he was a baby and sending him off down the River Nile. They did this because Pharaoh said there would be too many Israelites and they would take over Egypt.

In PE, we continued our ‘Athletics’ unit, we tried jumping like a kangaroo, slithering like a snake, moving slowly like a sloth and fast like a cheetah. We then tried improving our scores during our activities.

In art, we looked at how Lowry used white to add a tint to colours and black to add shade. We then practised creating our own tones of colour and we realised that if we added yellow to green, it made a better shade, rather than adding white.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing some of you at the Garden Party on Saturday.
