Year 2 w/b 22nd January

Date: 26th Jan 2024 @ 3:43pm

We have had another great week of learning in Year Two!

On Tuesday, we began planning our own persuasive letters to Jack. Last week’s drama activity had provided plenty of inspiration to plan the reasons why Jack should/shouldn’t climb the beanstalk and I was impressed with the independence demonstrated during this planning stage. These plans were extremely useful as we began our writing process. Within these letters, we have particularly focused on including questions, exclamations and emotive language as we refer directly to Jack in an attempt to persuade. Each letter is extremely convincing! Next week, we will finish our letters, independently editing our writing with purple pens before publishing our work. I am really looking forward to reading these letters when they are finished next week!

In maths this week, we have come to the end of our unit ‘Money’. During these lessons, we have been focusing on:

  • Working out how much change should be received after paying for something
  • Using prior knowledge to solve two-step word problems

On Thursday, we started our new unit ‘Multiplication and division’. We have been focusing on:

  • The understanding that objects can be grouped together and that groups containing the same number of objects are equal groups
  • Developing our skill in understanding the language of equal groups and applying it to drawing, arranging and making equal groups
  • Working out a total by counting equal groups through repeated addition

In science this week, we have used a magnifying glass to look closely at seeds and bulbs and have carefully drawn pictures of these, making sure to add lots of detail. We then played ‘Spot the odd one out’ when looking at sunflower seeds, bulbs and sunflower seedlings.

In geography this week, we have continued with our unit ‘Food around the world’. We started our lesson by looking at a map of the world and guessing where different foods such as rice, watermelon and pavlova came from. After this, we looked at empty food packets to find out where our food came from and how far it had travelled to get to us. We were amazed to hear that some food had travelled over 6000 miles to get to our plates! Thank you so much for your help with bringing in empty food packets.

In PE this week, we learnt how to control our ball whilst dribbling, imagining we were super quick race cars. Firstly, we played an exciting game of ‘Duck tails’ to see who could catch the most tails. We then played a game of 'Island Hopping' where we had to run to a safe zone before someone could remove our tag. Finally, we discussed that we need to use controlled small touches using both feet to dribble the ball.

We are very excited to welcome Miss Latham into Year Two as a student teacher and we look forward to having her in our Year Two class until the end of the Spring term.

I hope that you all enjoy a lovely weekend.
