Year 2 w/b 18th September

Date: 21st Sep 2023 @ 3:36pm

We have had yet another wonderful week of learning in Year Two. At the start of the week, we analysed our model text to identify the key features of a circular narrative. We collected examples of: lists of three, expanded noun phrases, conjunctions, questions, similes and repeated phrases. Across Thursday and Friday, we planned our own circular narrative; we planned a new route for our own characters to follow. I am looking forward to watching these stories come to life as we write next week.

In worship on Monday, we listened to the story of Zacchaeus and discussed how we should not judge people because we can only see what is on the outside and God can see what is in people’s hearts. Everyone deserves a second chance and by treating everyone with respect, our actions may change others. After worship, we spent time quietly considering these points whilst we traced our prayer labyrinth.

In science, we have been describing animals and their offspring. Firstly, we were given pictures of a baby, toddler, child, teenager and adult and placed these in order of the stages of life before discussing the similarities and differences between them. Afterwards, we looked at matching pictures of animals to their young and noticed that some animals look nothing like their offspring! Later in the week, we discovered what is meant by an ‘aerial photograph’ and ‘plan perspective’ in Geography. We discussed that if there were new children starting in our class, we would need to help them by drawing a plan view of our classroom. I was very impressed with the skill and teamwork that children demonstrated.

On Tuesday morning, we enjoyed getting together as a Key Stage for our first SCARF Assembly. Mrs Pulle introduced the theme of the assembly, which was to celebrate the differences between us all and to be respectful to one another. We were then very excited to be introduced to Harold the giraffe and his friends who told us the story of Monty the Manatee. We all agreed that Monty was still kind, even though the others were unkind to him, he helped them. He was very brave and he had a big heart, just like Jesus. We ended the lesson by having a mindful moment to think about ourselves- what makes us special, how we are different and how we are similar to others

In maths this week, we have been learning how to:

  • Build on our partitioning skills to write a 2-digit number as an addition of 10s and 1s, for example 43 = 40 + 3.
  • Use number lines, including number lines that do not show every number, only multiples of 10.
  • Use number lines, including number lines that do not start on 0, but start instead on a multiple of 10

We have enjoyed yet another DT lesson with Mrs Sherliker-Hewiitt this week. In this lesson, we recapped the different techniques we used in Year One to join fabric together e.g. pinning, gluing, stapling and discussed what equipment we might need for sewing. We then learned how to prepare the needle and thread for sewing ready to practise a running stitch on felt. We are looking forward to designing and planning our very own puppets next week.

In PE, we recapped the different shapes we learned last week (star, tuck, pike, arch, dish, straight) with a partner and then we thought about the different jumps we learned in Year One (star, tuck, straight). We remembered that to be a wonderful gymnast, we have to point our toes and have good body tension. After lots jumping, we discussed the different ways we could travel across the mat: leaps, hops, skips, turns and slides. To end our lesson, we created a little sequence and made sure to include jumps, shapes and different ways to travel.

I hope that you have a great weekend!
