Year 2 w/b 13th March

Date: 17th Mar 2023 @ 1:55pm

As it has been assessment time in school, much of our week has been dedicated to ‘proving what we know’ in English, maths and reading, to identify what the children can do well and ways we can help them to improve. The children have worked incredibly hard and have impressed me with their enthusiasm, determination and careful work. We are all looking forward to continuing with our English unit and ‘Length and height’ in maths next week.

In PSHE this week, we focussed on sleep. We explored the reasons why sleep is so important in our lives, how it can sometimes be difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep, and some of the reasons for this. As a class, we considered what we can do to help us foster good habits to help us fall asleep. Next, we listened to Mia’s story. Mia is a girl who struggles to fall asleep due to being very active in the day and having lots of busy thoughts running through her head at bedtime. After discussing the story, we talked about how different families have different routines for bedtime. Sometimes families have special words or customs that they do at bedtime, and this is a good way to mark the end of the day and shows that it’s time for sleep. Finally, we made our own bedtime routines to help Mia get to sleep, this involved reading a book, saying goodnight to family members and turning off the light.

In history this week, we learnt more about Elizabeth I and the Tudors. First, we explored how Elizabeth became queen, referring to the Tudor family tree. Next, we learnt what life was like during the Tudor period, thinking particularly about the huge differences between rich and poor Tudors. This will help us to compare the three queens and three time periods at the end of our unit. Finally, we researched Elizabeth’s major achievements during her reign. Following a debate and discussion, children were able to decide which achievement they thought was the most significant and why. We are really looking forward to learning all about Queen Victoria next week.

In science this week, we were excited to go out onto the playground to collect a range of small items. Once we got back into the classroom, we discussed whether these were alive, dead, or have never been alive. The children thoroughly enjoyed being nature detectives and look forward to learning all about the habitats of minibeasts next week.

In art this week, we have continued our learning about the Christian artist, Hannah Dunnett.  We added vibrant colour and creative detail to our artwork today, then outlined our creations with black ink.  We also really enjoyed planting wildflower seeds, decorating pots and using watercolour to paint special cards for all our lovely mummies.  (I have to say I was particulary impressed by the artwork...stunning, just stunning!)

We were also delighted to return to Church this week. It was lovely to see so many of you in Church for our Mothering Sunday service after a wonderful walk together in the sunshine. It was indeed very special to hear the children singing so beautifully together once again. We are looking forward to returning to church next week on Thursday for our class visit.

I look forward to seeing you all at parent consultations on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I hope you all have a lovely week.
