Year 2 w/b 10th July

Date: 14th Jul 2023 @ 11:20am

We have had a great week of learning in Year 2!

In English, it was finally time to write our own explanation texts. It was wonderful to see everyone’s creative and unique ideas and I thoroughly enjoyed reading each text to understand how all of the inventions work. We then published our work in our most beautiful handwriting.

Our spelling rule this week has been adding the suffix –ness. This rule works for words such as ‘kind-kindess’, ‘ill-illness’ and ‘good-goodness’.  However, if the root word ends with a consonant and a ‘y’, we have to swap the ‘y’ for an ‘i’ before adding the suffix ‘ness’. This rule works for words such as ‘dizzy-dizzness’, ‘silly-sillyness’ and ‘chatty-chattiness’.

This week, we enjoyed our final geography lesson together where we focused on comparing Tattenhall and Njoro. We are fortunate to have a link with St Lwanga Catholic Primary School in Njoro, Kenya so it was particularly fascinating to learn more about this area. It was also wonderful to see how much the children had noticed and understood about the geography of Tattenhall from our residential. This helped us to write our own quizzes which included questions about Tattenhall and Njoro. At the end of the lesson, we completed another quiz to conclude our learning on ‘Cities and Villages’.

In computing, we have been exploring 'ScratchJR'. In this lesson, we worked out how to add a new character and change the background. We are looking forward to discovering more features on Scratch next week.

It has been our SRE week this week. First, we explored the concept of gender stereotypes and challenging them. E.g. “only girls should wear pink”, “only boys like footaball”, “only girls do ballet”. It was great to see children acting respectfully whilst listening to what everybody has to say. Next, we explored the differences between male and female animals. Finally, we described the physical differences between males and females and ensured that we could name the different body parts.

In maths this week, we have been recapping addition and subtraction to get us ready for Year 3. To do this, we used the column method and worked on crossing the tens by exchanging 1 ten for 10 ones (which you may know as borrowing). We are looking forward to continue with this next week!

In RE, we learned the story of the 'Passover' and we realised why Moses was so important to the Jewish people. This was because Moses saved the Jewish people and rescued them from Pharoah enabling them to continue their journey to the promised land.

In PE, we continued our athletics lessons. We played an exciting new game called 'Explorers' where we enjoyed moving like our favourite animal. After this, we tried to improve our scores during our circuit activities.

In art, we wowed Mrs McAree with the wonderful facts we shared about L.S Lowry. We were able to remember the five colours Lowry used, his style of painting and even his favourite football team... Manchester City! We then completed our amazing artwork where we recreated our own Lowry style picture using perspective. Wow, they were amazing!

We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday for our Sports Day!
