Year 1 WC 25th February 2019

Date: 2nd Mar 2019 @ 12:10pm

We've had a super busy week in Year 1. In English we learnt a poem called 'In the Box of Curiosity'. The children then worked in Kagan teams to come up with their own actions and then perform the poem to the rest of the class. Learning the poem introduced us to alliteration as we read 'an angry ant ambling' and a 'ten tired trucks trundling'. As our topic this half term is Africa, we enjoyed playing with words to create alliterative sentences about animals. This also recapped our understanding of different word classes: adjectives, verbs and nouns. For example, we wanted to write about a lion so we generated words beginning with 'l'

adjectives verbs      nouns
lazy leaped log
lonely licked lake
lovely lay lips
lean  loved lollipops

After generating lots of ideas, we used these to create some silly sentences. This also helped the children to understand what was needed to make a sentence. We always need a verb and something/someone doing the verb (the subject). The other bits help to make our sentence more interesting. The children were extremely imaginative and we had some brilliant sentences such as 'The lonely lion lay on a log.' and 'The lazy lion leaped over a lake.'. Finally we wrote our own poems in the style of 'The Box of Curiosity' using everything we had learnt.

In maths we have been focusing on numbers to 50. In order to help at home, please practise counting forwards and backwards between 0 and 50 from different numbers. Many children find counting backwards quite tricky especially when counting through multiples of 10. In our reasoning, we discussed why we don't say '38, 39, 3010' demonstrating that when we have 10 ones in the ones column, this makes another ten and it moves across to the tens column.

In PSHE we have started our new theme 'aspirations'. We read 'How to Catch a Star' about a boy who dreamed of getting his very own star. We discussed how he felt at different parts of the story such as when he had to wait and wait and wait for a star to come out; when he thought his dream wasn't going to happen and finally when he got his star at the end of the story. Then we thought about our own dreams and aspirations for the future: things we wanted to learn/improve on, new things to try and places we want to visit.

In RE we have started our new unit 'Salvation' which we'll continue to look at over the next few weeks. We acted out the story of Palm Sunday and considered how Jesus felt knowing he was going to be betrayed. We looked at a palm cross and discussed how the palm cross reminded Christians of this day as people waved palm leaves and shouted 'Hosannah' when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Miss Latimer visited us on Friday afternoon. She is a PGCE student completing her final placement at Brereton in Year 1 and will be starting with us on Monday.

Don't forget our trip to Delamere is on Monday. Children must not wear uniform and should dress appropriately for a day in the forest. Currently, the weather forecast is saying there is a chance of showers so wellies and raincoats will be needed. Don't forget a packed lunch unless you have ordered one from the school office.

Tuesday is World Book Day. Parents are invited in at the beginning of the day to read with your child in the hall. At 3pm we would like parents to join us for our class story in the classroom. We hope to see as many of you there as possible. The book we'll be focusing on for the day is 'The Day the Crayons Quit' and we have lots of exciting activities planned. It's also Shrove Tuesday so we'll be making and eating some pancakes in the afternoon.
