Year 1 w/b 8th November

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 5:26pm

Week 2 in English has seen us exploring the first part of the Beegu story in more detail by looking carefully at how the illustrator has conveyed Beegu’s feelings. We noticed that Beegu’s ears were almost shining and stood upright when she was excited and hopeful but trailed behind her when she felt sad. We thought showered different synonyms to show Beegu’s emotions at different points in the story. Next, we created our own friends for Beegu out of playdough and described their looks and personality as part of a character description.

In phonics we have focused on ur (nurse with a purse) and ea (cup of tea) and thank you for your continued support encouraging your children to practise spellings and sentences at home containing these taught sounds.

In Power Maths we have now completed our unit on addition, and it has been pleasing to see the children using number lines, part whole models and mental counting on strategies to work with accuracy and check their answers. We have started our new unit on subtraction and children have been introduced to formal subtraction for the first time: they count how many are left, break apart a whole and find the difference. Children will model each of these situations using concrete and pictorial representations: taking away cubes, crossing out pictures and counting back on a number-line.

This week in Collective Worship we have had a class act of Remembrance having explored the significance of the poppy and we have thought and prayed about all those people that have fought in wars to defend freedom. Mr Whitworth brought in his Great Grandfather’s army medals from the First World War and shared with us a letter his Great Grandfather had sent home to his sister 3 days before he was killed in combat. We have also had the opportunity to learn more about Moses as a grown man and his meeting with God through the burning bush. Moses was challenged by God to return to Egypt to persuade the Pharoah to let the God’s People (the Hebrews/ Israelites) free. God had faith in Moses even though Moses was not sure he could do as God asked. This story from the Old Testament helped us think about challenges that we face and how we overcome them.

We invited some visitors from the Diocese to share in us RE this week. We focused on the ‘Bible’ as a key element to worshipping God. We looked at a range of Bibles and discovered they were like a mini library containing stories of adventure, mystery, courage and faith, poems, history and even music! Next, we explored the story of David and Goliath to understand more about God’s love and protection and David’s faith, courage and service. These values are many of our school values.

In forest school we designed and made homes for Beegu, working in teams to create places of safety, warmth, and love. We have not seen Beegu moving into any of the shelters we have made yet, but we are on alert. In Design and technology, we have started to learn how to join 2 pieces of fabric together by pinning, gluing, and stapling. We have learned to line up the 2 pieces of fabric carefully and to space the safety pins, glue, and staples along the outer edge of the fabric. This will be our test piece because next week we shall be making paper patterns of our playdough friend for Beegu. By the end of the half term all children will have made a fabric hand mitt or filled comforter for Beegu using one of the joining skills practised.

This week we have been lucky enough to have the computers in the afternoon. We started off the week by thinking about what a computer is and have found out that a computer can be part of a microwave, an oven and even some TV’s. We’ve been developing our mouse skills by dragging and dropping clipart, shapes and have even been drawing on our digital canvasses. On our final day of computing, we have put our mouse skills to the test and have created some great pieces of artwork check them out in our photos below. If you would like to do some more art at home, we used the following website to create our art: www.sketch.io/sketchpad.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend
