Year 1 w/b 8th January 2024

Date: 12th Jan 2024 @ 5:08pm

Happy New Year and how wonderful it is to be back at School ready to embrace the Spring Term. It has certainly been a chilly start but gloves, hats and scarves have kept us as warm as possible at playtimes

An exciting package containing a little note, pencil, binoculars, a magnifying glass, some chunks of cheese and a tiny brown bag all stored within a cheese wrapper introduced us to our new book Hermelin by Mini Grey. All these items belonged to a detective mouse.  We asked lots of questions about why Hermelin acted with such hope, compassion and respect for others before we wrote our own questions. We also learnt about plurals adding s/es to words, how the prefix un changes the meaning of words and how adjectives add colour to descriptions.

This week we launched our Brereton Reading Buddies. The scheme aims to increase opportunities for children to read to other children (peer mentoring) and to encourage reading for pleasure. There are proven benefits to buddy schemes such as positive role modelling and the development of skills such as patience, empathy and confidence. Please take a look at the poster on this week’s newsletter for more information. We hope the children enjoy their first buddy session and tell you all about it!

Phonics has focused on are (care and share) and ur (nurse with a purse). You will find a ‘how to help at home’ document that has been sent to you on Dojo. On the document you will find links to phonics videos to support the sounds we have been learning in class this week. We will send a new document each week containing the sounds for the week.

In maths this week we have been counting to twenty and using our knowledge of ten to make 11, 12 and 13 and 14, 15 and 16. Using a tens frame to count on from ten rather than counting each individual object in a group makes for speedy recognition.

Our worship focused on Epiphany and how the Maji might have felt at each stage of the journey. We then linked these emotions to the start of a new year and we considered how we demonstrated hope, celebrated good times and overcame challenges.

In RE, in considering ‘What made Jesus special?’ we first explored famous friendships we know like Sven and Kristoff and Timon and Pumba before considering our own special friendships and the qualities of a great friend. Next, we thought about why people made friends with Jesus and how Jesus chose his special friends, his disciples from Luke 5 verses 1-11 and 27-28. It was great to act out the story on the boat where the disciples cast their nets and caught so many fish. The fishermen wanted to follow Jesus and left their boats to be God's messengers.

Our No outsiders lesson focused on ‘My world, Your world’ and even though we are different to others we share many similarities and if we work together we can create harmony and peace.

Design technology saw us naming and classifying fruit and vegetables and several of us were rather surprised to discover peppers, tomatoes and peas are fruit as they contain seeds. Forest school involved finding materials on the forest floor to bend and fix to make magnifying glasses just like the one Hermelin used. Ball skills focused on working in pairs to stop a ball with the sole and inside of the foot.

In Geography we have introduced our new topic that looks at farming. We have recognised that there are different types of farms. We categorised farms into three main types: arable, livestock and dairy. We already have some dairy farm experts in the class who were keen to share their knowledge. This is set to be an exciting unit of work.

In Science we have moved on to look at materials. This week we shared what we already know about materials then looked at the difference between the name of an object and the materials it is made from.

Have a lovely weekend,
