Year 1 w/b 7th November 2022

Date: 11th Nov 2022 @ 3:48pm

Week 2 in English has seen us exploring the first part of the Beegu story in more detail by looking carefully at how the illustrator has conveyed Beegu’s feelings. We noticed that Beegu’s ears were almost shining and stood upright when she was excited and hopeful but trailed behind her when she felt sad. We thought showered different synonyms to show Beegu’s emotions at different points in the story. Next, we created our own friends for Beegu out of playdough and described their looks and personality as part of a character description.

In Collective worship this week we focused on Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000- 5 loaves and 2 fishes satisfying many listening to Jesus. We thought about the small things that we do that make a significant impact. Back in the classroom, Year One suggested saying thank you, holding a door open, picking up litter, looking out for people that are upset and donating food to a food bank were a few ways small actions can have a significant impact.

The My Happy Mind unit for this half term is ‘Celebrate.’ In this unit the children will learn what character is and how your character makes you special. There are 5 character strengths that we shall focus upon:

Love and kindness

Bravery and honesty

Exploring and learning

Teamwork and friendship

Love of life and our world

We thought about where our strengths lie and loved singing the ‘We are wonderful and Special ‘song. We agreed we all have different strengths, and we can use them each day.

In Phonics we have focused on air (that’s not fair)) and ir (whirl and twirl) and thank you for your continued support encouraging your children to practise spellings and sentences at home containing these taught sounds.

In Power Maths we have started our new unit on subtraction and children have been introduced to formal subtraction for the first time: they count how many are left, break apart a whole and find the difference. Children will model each of these situations using concrete and pictorial representations: taking away cubes, crossing out pictures and counting back on a number-line.

We have continued our learning about Living things (including Humans) in Science and used mirrors to look closely at our faces and have named all the features we can see. We then thought carefully about what I similar between different people and what differences we can see.

This week in PE we started our unit of learning on gymnastics. The coaches were amazed by how well the children all listened as well as how well they demonstrated their skills showing great balance and poise. Well done Year 1!

We have had a fantastic week focusing on Computing, where we have been exploring the online programme ‘Sketchpad’ whilst improving our mouse control. We were very impressed by the way the children were able to use a mouse to control the computer and create their own pictures. The children have learnt about a range of tools that they could use and explored the effects each one made. We looked at different pen styles, shapes and clipart. On Wednesday we looked at Wassily Kandinsky’s art work and the children made their own images based on this work. On Thursday we used images from the story ‘Beegu’ and created our own representations of these on ‘Sketchpad’. The children loved this activity and were able to create some amazing scenes with the tools we had already practiced using.

Today we walked over to the flag pole with Reception and Year 2 to observe the minutes silence at 11:00am. The children were very respectful and reflective and showed great maturity. During the Forest School session on Tuesday the children discussed Remembrance day and the importance of it and also created their own remembrance cross.

This years KS1 nativity is called ‘Busy, Busy Bethlehem’ which tells the story of a busy Roman Soldier who is changed by a chance meeting with Mary and Joseph and who witnesses the birth of Jesus, the son of God. Year 2 will take the lead in the production with the main speaking parts, but Year 1 will be ably supporting them with singing, dances and some super acting. All parts and costume letters will be distributed on Monday.

Please see our class page for details of our new topic and information about dates, including our Nativity.
