Year 1 w/b 6th March 2023

Date: 10th Mar 2023 @ 4:03pm

In English this week we have continued to look at our model text based on the story ‘There’s a Tiger in the Garden’. We have learnt the text using a text map and actions. This will help us when we come to innovating the text and we write our own search and return stories. We have analysed the text and looked at the language features used. After becoming very familiar with the model text we began to adapt the story by choosing our own main characters, selecting new creatures to be discovered in the garden and thinking of new locations to search in the garden. For the locations we had to think about using alliterations to add impact in our story telling a great example we had was the ‘shadowy shed’. Next week we shall start writing our own search and return stories using our plans. This is a great point in the year to observe all the progress children have already made in their writing. We can’t wait to read the children’s completed stories.

In phonics we have focused on wh (whisk, whisk) and ph (take a photo). Homework next week will reflect this.

In history we started to look at homes from the past. We looked at homes from the Medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian times. We particularly liked the black and white stripes on the Tudor buildings. Next week we will be looking at Victorian homes in more detail.

This week in My Happy Mind we started our new module: relate. In this lesson we discussed lots of different people in our lives we might need to relate to. We thought about how we might relate to our friends, our family and our teachers.

Our focus in Collective worship has been both hope and Lent. On Monday we explored Jesus as a light in the world and considered ways we shine and spread this light. On Wednesday Revd Sandi asked us to think about the ‘dust’ in our lives, the things we do wrong and ask forgiveness for. She shared with us the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector who made bad choices before he met Jesus and wanted to change, say sorry and be forgiven.

As part of our learning in RE based on the key question, ‘What is the most important part of Easter?’ we  went outside to be Spring detectives. We noticed, despite the cold weather, there were lots of signs of nature coming alive- daffodils, crocus, primroses, daisies on the school field and buds on our apple tree. Back in the class we gathered to plant our own seeds which looked shrivelled and dead but with sunshine and water they will grow and blossom. Finally, we read the story of ‘The First Easter’ focusing on the events of Holy week. We compared how planting a seed and watching it grow could remind us about the first Easter. We discussed the hope and new life in seeds germinating and growing and Jesus who had died on Good Friday being resurrected on Easter Sunday.

We have also been delighted to welcome Revd Sandi into our class to explore how she celebrates Easter and Jesus’ resurrection at Church. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions we were unable to visit the church on Thursday but we look forward to visiting the church at a later date.

During Art and design we explored the paintings and inspiration of Henri Rousseau. Although he never actually visited a jungle, he would take his easel and paints to large plant filled glasshouses and imagine wildlife exploring the undergrowth. One of his most famous paintings was ‘Surprise’ and this featured a predatory tiger roaming between the tress, plants, and bushes. Inspired by this painting we worked cooperatively to create paintings of large jungles mixing a range of green shades.

We have continued our ‘materials’ topic in Science, looking at properties of materials. The children handled a variety of materials and thought about weather they were hard, soft, rough or smooth and if they could, bend and stretch them. We also discussed if a material was transparent and why we might choose a particular material for a certain job.

Out in Forest school the children thought about which animal they might like to discover. They used natural material to create their own animals and thought about different ways they could join the materials.

Next week in school we shall be assessing children’s progress in maths as part of our teaching. Next Friday 17th March we have a short Mothering Sunday service at 9.30am at St Oswald’s to which you are warmly invited . It was lovely to see and hear some of our class performing in the Music extravaganza last Wednesday – singing and playing their instruments. Well done Year One!

Have a lovely weekend!
