Year 1 w/b 27th June

Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 6:07pm

Year One have worked incredibly hard this week to write their own letters to introduce themselves to Miss Roxburgh. As you all now know, Miss Roxburgh will be the Year Two class teacher in September, and we are lucky enough to have her join us for a few weeks before the summer to get to know the children and our school. This has been an opportunity for the children in Year One to share their understanding of the features of letter writing and to share their Year One writing skills. On Monday we planned our letters ready to begin writing, when writing we had to remember to include extra details to make our letters as interesting as the letter Tom wrote to the Night Pirates. Over two days we wrote our letters and will then publish them to demonstrate our fantastic letter formation and handwriting. We were all very impressed with the attention to detail and effort that went into these letters and Miss Roxburgh herself was very excited to read them. We hope you will join us in welcoming Miss Roxburgh to the school.

In Maths we have been continuing our work on finding one quarter of a number or a group of objects. Sharing into four equal groups is a clear way to find one quarter but many of the children also found the strategy to find half of a number, then half that number (half of a half). Using counters or objects has been a helpful strategy to physically see the four equal groups.

In Phonics we have been looking at the ph sound (take a photo) and adding the prefix un- to a range of words. The ph sound and un- prefix will be reflected in the spelling for next week.

In PE we have been continuing our athletics unit of work and this week have been working on long jump, starting with stationary standing jumps to see how far we could jump. This was a great opportunity for the class to challenge themselves and to set targets to work on and develop in the lesson. The action shots below capture the determination and drive shown by the children. This afternoon, half the class also enjoyed a fun swim session and they confidently enjoyed this free time to swim around and play games with their friends . Again, the photos below catpture a little of the fun enjoyed.

Our Geography work this week has built on all that we have learnt so far. We recapped the five oceans, seven continents and the seas around the UK along with the definitions of human and physical features. We then sorted and compared beach locations around the UK with international beach locations. We were able to compare the similarities and differences between two locations as well as identifying the human and physical features we could see in photos of both locations.

This week has also been our computing week for the summer term, and it was taught by Miss Ridge. We have looked at data handling as an introduction to data. We have learnt what data is and the different ways that it can be represented. We have developed an understanding of why data is useful, how it can be used and the ways in which it can be gathered and recorded both by humans and computers. As many of you know, Miss Ridge has been part of our class since the start of the summer term as part of her training to become a teacher. This week we said goodbye to Miss Ridge and would like to wish her all the very best for whatever her future holds.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the garden party this weekend.

Warm wishes for a lovely weekend,
