Year 1 w/b 22nd January 2024

Date: 26th Jan 2024 @ 5:09pm

After beginning our innovated stories last week, we have been writing sections of our stories over the course of this week with some fantastic results. We have been working on using our text maps to support our writing, applying the writing features we know to include in story writing and focussing on the spelling of key words we just need to know how to spell such as ‘they’ and ‘was’. After finishing our stories and rereading them to check they made sense we began publishing our work using our best handwriting. Everyone seemed so proud of their work which was great to see.

In phonics, we have been working on ai (snail in the rain) and oa (goat in a boat) and please see the videos sent on dojo to reinforce this teaching.

In maths we have been continuing to practice using numbers up to 20 and looking at how we can use number lines to help us count. We started by looking at number lines and how they are created, we then moved on to looking at number lines with missing numbers and working out which numbers we needed to add. Finally, we looked at blank number lines and used our estimating skills to work out where the mid-point was, and which number need to be recorded there. We spent the second half of the week comparing numbers and practicing using a range of vocabulary such as: greater than, less than, larger, smaller, fewer and more. The children showed a great understanding of number and how to compare them to show the value of a number.

Following last week’s work on identifying the differences between fruit and vegetables and classifying them by those that had seeds and no seeds, this week we focused on how they were grown. We discovered that botanists grow fruit and vegetables in one of three places.

· On trees or vines

· Above the ground

· Below the ground

We discovered that fruit only grows on vines or trees, but vegetables grow above the ground or underground.

In PSHE, Harold the healthy and happy giraffe helped us explore what medicines were, how we take them, examples of medicines we had taken and how we keep medicines safe. Harold found some of his Mummy's tablets and thought they looked like sweets, but he was very sensible and did not eat one but took them to his Mummy to lock away safely in the medicine cupboard.

In Collective worship we thought about how rainbows are a sign of hope during darker times. We listened to the story of Noah’s Ark and discussed how he would have felt during each stage of the story. Did Noah ever worry? How did Noah remain hopeful? During our reflection time, we thought about how what we can do to stay hopeful during periods of challenge or upset.

To help us discover why Jesus was so special we shared bread as we imagined that little boy over 2000 years ago giving his lunch to Jesus. Jesus prayed over the loaves and fishes before distributing the food amongst a crowd of 5,000. Next, we looked at paintings of the feeding of 5,00 and asked many wondering questions.

· I wonder what it would have felt like to have been there?

· I wonder what would have happened if there had been nobody with a picnic to share?

· I wonder how Jesus could feed all those people?

In Geography we have continued to look at Farmer Phil’s farm, this time looking at a map he had created of the farm. We looked at compass points then used these to move around the farm using the key to find out which part of the farm we had travelled to. It was tricky work, but we were all excellent at using the key to locate where we had ended up. In Science we continue to build on our understanding of materials, this week looking at some of the properties of materials.

Another great week in Year One, well done to all!
