Year 1 w/b 13th March 2023

Date: 17th Mar 2023 @ 4:10pm

It was lovely to see many of you in Church today and what a delight it was to be back in Church together, thank you to those of you who walked down with us in the glorious sunshine. We were so pleased to see the children’s confidence and enthusiasm in the way they wished to read prayers and talk about their Mums. As Sandi said, the singing was wonderful and we were very proud of them all.

In RE we recapped the sequence of the Easter story. We enjoyed watching a video on the Easter story too! We worked in teams to sequence Easter story cards chronologically.  Specifically, we talked about why Jesus died on the cross. Ruby B told us that Jesus died because of the horrible people who were jealous of Jesus. Lily said that Jesus died to save all of his people. We learnt that Jesus died on the cross to give eternal life to his people.

In English this week the children have used their plans this week to write their own search and return stories. We have been very impressed by the quality of the children’s writing, they have remembered to include many of the features from our key text as well as using all the skills they have as writers. The children have produced some fabulous stories which we are sure you will enjoy reading next week when you come into school for parent consultations.

In Phonics we focused on au (Paul the astronaut) and ue (To the rescue!).  Homework this week will reflect this.

In our Maths lessons the children have begun a new area of learning looking at measurement. We have started by comparing length using the vocabulary shorter and taller we will then be moving on to using non-standard and standard units of measurements. During this week we have also carried out some Maths assessments to see where the children are up to with their learning and what we need to focus on next. We were really pleased to see all of the children working hard to show us all of their mathematical talents.

We used the opportunity of Forest School this week to incorporate some of our ICT learning. The children used their fantastic animal models created last week to take some photographs. We thought about how to take a good photograph thinking about positioning and light as well as ensuring the equipment we are using is held still. The children then took some images of their animals in different areas of our Forest and we hope to use these later on in the term to create some of our own digital stories.

In Science this week the children used their knowledge of materials to predict which would be the most suitable to make wellington boots for Nora. We then carried out an experiment thinking about how to make it a fair test to find out which of the materials were waterproof. We then discussed what we had found out and recorded our findings.

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend with your families and remember next Friday we are inviting the children to come to school dressed as their favourite animal. This could be as simple as wearing some animal ears, patterned leggings or adding some face paint.
