Year 1 w/b 11th September 2023

Date: 15th Sep 2023 @ 3:58pm

Our work in English this week led us to discovering a picture of 2 soldiers under wooden floorboards and they were surrounded by some of the toys from the past we saw last week. We made a list of all the things we could see in the picture and used adjectives to describe them. After this we imagined the conversation between the soldiers and some of us even dressed as soldiers. Finally, we discovered that the pictures and toys belonged in a book called ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy.’ Next week we are keen to read the text and discover more about the life of these toys from the past.

In phonics we have reviewed some of the teaching in reception and focused on sh, ch and th with some groups exploring ar and or. As in reception this is structured 20-minute lesson where we say the sound, read words with that sound in them, count the phonemes using’ Fred fingers’ and finally write the word before using focus words in dictated sentences. Spelling homework will be sent home on Monday and will give the children a chance to practise what they have been doing in phonics the previous week. Can homework be returned to school by Friday please.

Guided reading has started this week and thank you to all those parents that have commented, signed planners and listened to your child each day this week. Books will be changed on a Monday and Thursday every week, if your child has read their book, and reading diaries should be in school every day. The guided reading book will invariably be different to their individual home reader.

In Maths, we have focused on the children’s ability to recognise, represent, and manipulate numbers to 10. We started by practising and developing their ability to sort and group objects using different criteria, then moved on to counting groups of objects up to 10. Children will learn to recognise and count different representations of numbers to 10 and use a ten frame to help structure counting and reasoning. Practising writing the digits 1-10 with the correct orientation at home would be great if you know your child finds this a little challenging.

In Collective worship we focused on Jesus’ greatest commandment ‘To love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul and with all your strength and to love your neighbour as yourself. We agreed this would take respect and wrote a class acrostic reminding ourselves what respect means and thinking about the way we speak, behave and act can reflect our understanding.

In RE as an introduction to harvest, we classified lots of different foods from where they were sourced or grown. Many items were grown or sourced in the UK, such as eggs, milk, Cheshire potatoes, carrots, apples, and breakfast cereals. Others, even if bought locally, were sourced from around the world- rice, coffee, tea, and spices. We enjoyed sorting the food before thanking God for the good food we have and the seasons we enjoy. Next, we looked at paintings from a range of artists that showed harvests around the world. We loved the way communities worked together to gather the harvest and celebrate.

During our 'No Outsiders' lesson we read and discussed Max the Champion. We thought Max was amazing. He looked friendly and happy and spent his days dreaming about sport and taking part in activities at school. When we looked closely, we noticed Max used an inhaler which some of us also use at school and home. Using inhalers does not stop any of us being champions at all sorts of things inside and outside school. No Outsiders at Max's school and No Outsiders at Brereton- everyone is included, and no one is left out.

Our learning in science focuses on plants and trees after making a record about we what we already know last week this week we chose our class tree (an apple tree in the garden area) which we shall keep a diary of over the next 10 months to record seasonal changes. We had a go at sketching the tree and some were able to add some labels to name different parts of the tree.

In Wednesday’s Forest school we made clay plaques and carefully pressed a range of deciduous leaves into the soft clay taking prints of the leaves. This linked well with our work in Design Technology where we were looking at different textures around our environment. We explored both inside and outside and used wax crayons and paper to take different rubbings to have a look at the patterns we could create.

Our work in history links closely with our key text ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’. We will be looking at the history of transport. This week we began by thinking about different types of transport which we use and shared some of our experiences of this. We then looked at images of how these modes of transport may have looked in the past. We looked at a timeline to see which order the developments of transport were made and will build on this as we focus on a different mode of transport each week.

We have introduced Spanish teaching to the class this week and we have met our Spanish friends on our weekly PowerPoint and have practised saying hello and good morning to them in Spanish.

Gymnastics is our focus for PE this half term and lesson one was all about performing a range of shapes such as squat, pike, tuck, straddle and dish with a strong body, control and pointed toes. There was some lovely partner work, and it was great to see confident demonstrations where pairs of children performed a short sequence of shapes.

So, a busy but most enjoyable week. We are very pleased with the way in which the class have settled into Year 1, and we hope you can all enjoy a lovely weekend.

Many thanks
