Year 1 w/b 11th December 2023

Date: 15th Dec 2023 @ 5:52pm

Our very exciting event of the week this week was space day. First of all, a huge thank you for all your help and support with the fantastic costumes. There was great excitement as the children arrived at school and we were amazed by the vast array of imaginative ideas the children had for their costumes.  Beegu even made an appearance!

Our morning was spent completing our Computing unit of work for this half term. The focus of which was logging on to a computer and mouse control. After initially thinking about the big question ‘what is a computer?’ we considered why we need to use passwords and why Year One might need a class login and password for the computers. We then explored the online drawing program Sketchpad. We looked at the different drawing tools, adding shapes, adding clipart and changing the background of our pictures before using these skills to produce work in the style of Kandinsky and then our own self-portraits.  Using the mouse was tricky and required determination to succeed. It is a skill that we will continue to work on. Sketchpad is an online drawing program that you can access for free at home. It would be lovely so see some art work and self-portraits that have been created at home. Sketchpad can be found here: https://sketch.io/sketchpad/

In the afternoon we completed a range of space themed activities. One activity was to create space inspired art work. After looking at incredible images from space we created artwork using wax crayons and ink. It was wonderful to see children’s creativity come through in this stand-alone artwork. Another activity was to use construction materials to create space themed models. We also made space rock cakes with huge success. This baking session gave us the chance to develop our baking skills while also smelling new ingredients such as the vanilla that went into the mix. It was also encouraging to see children working together when completing each step especially when weighing the ingredients. We hope the rock cakes tasted as good as they looked!

We have attached some of the many photos taken from the day, we are sure the children will love to tell you about all of the fun and exciting things they did.
