Welcome to Year Two

Date: 3rd Sep 2021 @ 5:59pm

What a wonderful two days we have enjoyed as we welcomed the children and their families back to school. It was a pleasure to see so many happy faces as the children settled in beautifully to Year Two.

On Thursday, we first enjoyed sharing news from the summer holiday. It was a pleasure to hear all about the wonderful time that the children have shared with their families. We then became detectives to complete a classroom scavenger hunt. The children were very excited to explore the changes to their Year Two classroom!

Our next activity was phonics bingo as an opportunity to recap the sounds that were taught in Year One. As shown in the photos below, we also completed a carousel of phonics activities as an opportunity to practise reading and writing these sounds within words.

In the afternoon, we each created a birthday card. We are all looking forward to each receiving a card on our birthday that has been made by one of our Year Two friends! To end the day, we revisited the story of ‘The Colour Monster’, talking about the different feelings represented by the colours, and what each feeling may look like. This helped us to work in small groups to create posters for our PSHE classroom display. The use of a thesaurus was introduced to help us find synonyms for the different feelings. The children are looking forward to referring to these posters in the mornings to help them to identify how they are feeling that day.

This morning, we completed a carousel of maths activities. This was a good opportunity to begin recapping our addition, subtraction and place value learning from Year One, in preparation for the new Year Two learning. As the photos display, the children worked beautifully in their groups to work through the games and activities as a team.

For our first piece of writing in Year Two, we have each written a letter to Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Pulle, thanking them for being such fantastic Year One teachers. The children have written about their favourite memories from Year One, shared news from their summer holidays, and have suggested some top tips for the new Year One class. I know that Mrs Pulle and Mrs Lindersen will love reading these wonderful letters. Next week, we will be starting our new book for this half term. We can’t wait to see how our writing improves throughout the year.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend. Mrs Warren and I are already looking forward to seeing all of the children again on Monday.
