Welcome Back Reception!

Welcome Back!

What a busy start to the half term.  This week we have been trapping aliens, managing money and building rockets….no wonder we’re exhausted!

At the start of the week we received news that a strange contraption had been found just outside the school grounds and we decided it might be an alien space craft!  Quickly, we searched for instructions and found a set entitled ‘How to Trap a Baby Alien,’ so we set to work, reading the instructions ourselves and building the traps in our Kagan teams.  On Wednesday we were very excited to receive a letter from the alien, informing us that he was just too quick for us.  The spelling in the letter was rather strange so we decided he (or she!) must speak a different language.  We had lots of fun using our phonics knowledge to practise reading alien words and deciding their definition.  You can practise reading more alien words at home:

By now our imaginations were running away with us and we created wonderful pictures showing what the alien might look like.  We then generated adjectives to help describe the alien.  The children produced some truly wonderful writing, well done all!

In Maths we have been learning about making different amounts of money.  We used Numicon tiles to help us do this and we investigated ways of making 6p, 10p and 20p.  Money is always a tricky concept so the more experience the children get at home the better.  Why not visit the supermarket and use the self-service check outs or add up coins found down the back of the sofa?

Fair Trade fortnight begins next week so we have been learning what this means and how we can help.  Our rice crispy cakes, made using fair trade chocolate, were truly delicious!  Miss Nolan has challenged children to research a Fair Trade item for homework ready for a new display.

Our fantastic PTA have been busy buying lots of new resources (thank you everyone!) so we have had great fun, not only playing with our new toys but the boxes they came in!  We read the wonderful, well-known story ‘Whatever Next’ and worked in teams to build some super rockets.

In PE we have continued with gymnastics and this week we learnt different rolls.  We will then combine all we have learnt to create sequences next week.

Our RE topic this term is ‘New Life’ so keep an eye out when out and about for signs of Spring!  We read the Easter Story and the children were all very moved and responsive, asking lots of insightful questions and discussing the meanings behind the text.  I felt very proud of the class after this session.

Well done everyone, it has been a wonderful week and I hope you all have a lovely weekend!
