Spring Term- Final Week

Date: 30th Mar 2023 @ 4:31pm

We've had a wonderful week to finish off the term.

Our work on fractions and decimals has drawn to a close for the moment. The children showed a good understanding of their new decimals work, including a new column: hundredths. Today's problem called for the children to cut a 3m-long pizza into equal slices for 100 party guests. You never know when these skills may be needed!

Also rounding up this week was our writing units based on the beautiful book, Leaf. The children have shown great enjoyment reasearching a fact-file on the endangered polar bear. Apparently, they can swim for 6 hours non-stop quite easily and we were very surprised to find out that their skin is actually black. Our new classroom display of story writing based on the adventures of Leaf is now up too.

The theatre has come to town not once but twice this week. The children have enjoyed professional performances of both Wind in the Willows and Scrooge- both absolute treats.

As part of our PSHE work, Year 4 have been considering how and when to use a credit card. There were different approaches: spend then borrow towards the end of the month if needed; put large one-off payments on to a credit card or pay for large one-off payments and put as little as possible on the credit card. Several children showed great acumen in this role and I can see future Chancellors of the Exchequer developing already!

Leading up to our Vikings unit next term, we have been exploring the art of longboat making this week. First we found out about real-life longboats: what they were made of, what shape they were. Then, the children considered how they would make their own, reinforcing if necessary, and building a stable hull. Some children chose to work from a given template and others chose to experiment and deveop their own designs, problem solving as they went. Of course, this week we have thought deeply about the events leading to Jesus' crucifixion and His ultimate Resurection. We have been tackling the question of whether this is a time for sadness or joy and have been looking at Jesus' actions throughout Holy Week. This has culminated in several artworks and even a newspaper headline or two.

We wish you a peaceful Easter break and look forward greatly to next term.

With best wishes, Mrs Tice and Mrs McAree
