Year 1 and 2 Polar Express Day

Class: Year 1 Year: 2019 - 2020

Today the children in Year 1 and 2 have enjoyed a Polar Express day. We began by reading the story in our pyjamas. Then we watched the beginning of the film with hot chocolate and marshmallows. We imagined getting off the train at the North Pole and thought about what we could see, hear, feel and smell. In mixed groups of year 1 and 2 the children generated ideas for adjectives, verbs and similes. Then each class wrote some setting descriptions of the North Pole. I was particularly impressed with the children’s vocabulary and how they have started to use words and phrases they have ‘magpied’ from other stories we have read. 

This afternoon the children have used chalk pastels to create pictures of the Polar Express train trying to create the illusion of the train moving very fast in the snow.
