Happy New Year to you all and welcome back to a new term in Year 2!

I hope you have had a healthy and happy festive break. It has been a pleasure to welcome the children back to school this week; I was so pleased to see everybody. Our week began with an exciting and intriguing discovery, we discovered a number of jigsaw pieces around the classroom. We worked together to find and collect the hidden pieces before completing the jigsaw. This revealed the front cover of our new text, Jack and the Baked Beanstalk. As part of a whole class discussion, we each predicted what would happen in this story and how it may differ from the original traditional tale. We then focused on writing predictions based on the front cover of the book and our prior knowledge of traditional tales. We can’t wait to see if any of our predictions are correct! On Thursday, the first page of the book was revealed as we found out about the fast-food van owned by Jack and his mum. Our learning objective for this lesson was to practise alliteration in the form of persuasion so we created adverts for Jack’s Fast Food van to persuade people it is the best place to go and eat. Within our advertisements, we thought especially about alliteration, commas in a list and exciting adjective choices. E.g. “Come to Jack’s Fast Food van! We’ve got brilliant burgers, sensational sausages, mouth-watering milkshakes, friendly faces and welcoming waiters.”

As part of the No Outsiders curriculum for PSHE and we have been completing a series of lessons across the year to support our learning. Each lesson is centred around a key text and for Year Two this half term this was: Odd Egg. Unlike the other birds who laid an egg, Duck found his. He thinks that his huge egg with green spots is beautiful. The other birds think that it is an odd egg. Once all the other eggs have hatched Duck still has to wait for his new arrival which turns out to be a crocodile! This story shows the love between a parent and child, even if they are not biologically related. This started a discussion around the meaning of ‘odd’, how the birds felt when they laid their eggs and if the duck feels proud when he finds an egg. Our final discussion was around whether the duck felt proud or ashamed when a crocodile comes out. Most of us agreed that the duck would have felt very proud indeed!

In Religious Education this week,  we have been thinking about forgiveness.  We thought about what kind of words we use when we make a mistake.  We then decided that saying sorry to God in church or during our prayers was just as important as saying sorry to each other.

We are super excited about our Design and Technology topic this half term,  we are going to be making healthy pizzas!  We started off our learning by sorting different foods and looking at balanced, healthy diets.

We had such fun in P.E today, we started our football topic and learnt how to control the ball, we practised keeping the ball close and then stopping it with the soles of our feet.

In maths this week, we have enjoyed starting our new topic ‘Shape’. In these lessons we have been looking at recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes and making links between them. We then began to identify common features of different types of 2D and 3D shapes and looked at counting the number of sides on 2D shapes. We are looking forward to learning more about shapes next week.

We look forward to another busy and exciting term! Have a great weekend.
