Year 6 w.b: 25.11.24

Date: 29th Nov 2024 @ 3:15pm

Yet another great week in Year 6, it has been filled with making predictions about our new text, adding and subtracting fractions and developing programs using micro:bit LED’s.

In English, we explored our new model text; a newspaper report about Rami’s rescue from the treacherous sea.  To begin with, we made predictions about how Rami was rescued or if in deed he was rescued.  We then found the definitions to tricky vocabulary within the text. Finally, we used our comprehension skills to answer questions about the report.

In Maths, we completed our first unit of fractions.  We learnt how to add and subtract mixed numbers and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa.  Mixed numbers are made up of a whole number and a fraction. Any whole number can be written as a fraction where the numerator is a multiple of the denominator. So, a mixed number can also be written as an improper fraction where the numerator is bigger than the denominator.

In Spanish, we pretended to be weather presenters. We learnt how to say 'In the north, south, east or west' and then what the weather was like. Michael Fish eat your heart out!

In Music, we made up ways of recycling sounds using our own voices, it was great fun.  We worked in small groups and even performed our beatbox masterpieces.

n PSHE, we discussed our differences and similarities. We learnt that although we have differences and we are all unique, we do have many similarities. We all want to feel included, be respected, be loved and feel safe.  We then thought about someone we liked and thought about two things that make us similar and two things that makes us different. Mrs Wood taught us to always treat people with respect.

In PE, we began by passing the football to each other using the side of our foot and not our toe. We then tried shooting against an open goal, against a goal keeper and then a feeder. We finished off our PE lesson with a mini match, it was such fun!

In Art, we looked at our school prayer and designed images inside the heart outline, we thought carefully about what we thought the prayer meant to us.

In Geography, we found out key information about Asia’s Biomes. A biome is a large region of Earth that has a certain climate and certain types of living things. Major biomes include tundra, forests, grasslands, and deserts.  The plants and animals of each biome have traits that help them to survive in their particular biome. Asia is home to seven major biomes. These include the tropical rainforest, temperate forest, desert, tundra, taiga (also known as boreal forest), grassland, and savanna.

We were very lucky and had a visit from two sixth form students, Livvy and Hannah from Holmes Chapel Comprehensive, they came to show us how to use micro:bits.   A micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer designed to inspire our creative thinking and are programmable to allow us to get hands-on with coding and digital making.

Maths Homework: Pages 30, 31 and 32.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
