Year 6 w.b: 23.09.24

Date: 27th Sep 2024 @ 12:37pm

Yet another amazing week in Year 6, filled with finding common factors, adding detail to dioramas and writing the most amazing discovery narratives.

In Maths, we began our new unit – Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  We completed calculations with 5 digits and tried matching them to their best estimates.  Following this, we revised common factors - factors are numbers that divide exactly into a number. They are the multiplication “facts” of the number.  A common factor is a factor that is shared by two or more numbers.  We found out that the number 1 will be a common factor for every single number!

In English, we started to plan and write our amazing discovery narratives, describing the journey of Darwin and Fitzroy as they voyaged across perilous waters to reach their destination.  We carefully thought about what we would be able to see, hear, smell, taste and touch as if we journeyed alongside the courageous pair.

In Spanish, we recapped our letter sounds and completed listening tasks to spell and write Spanish stationery words.

In our PSHE lesson, we acted out a little scenario about 6 children who were playing football near some houses.  One of the children kicks the ball into someone's garden and then the blame game begins followed by peer pressure to climb over a fence to retrieve the ball.  We discussed what they should do-should they climb the fence even though it's wrong or should do the right thing and ask permission to get the ball back.

In Art, we selected and used materials to achieve a specific outcome for our dioramas.  We embellished our work by using a variety of techniques, including drawing, painting and printing on top of textural work.  We had to carefully consider methods of making our fabric look like a scene from Darwin’s adventures.

In History, we studied primary and secondary sources; primary sources provide raw information and first-hand evidence, secondary sources provide second-hand information and commentary from other researchers.  We explored the role of women in the 1950’s and discovered that they were not fairly treated and they were expected to marry, have children, and devote themselves to maintaining a home and being the primary caretaker of the children. We are so glad that times have changed!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
