Year 6 w.b: 21.10.24
Date: 24th Oct 2024 @ 4:13pm
What an amazing first half term, we can't believe how much we have managed to fit in. We have loved getting to know each of the children and they have settled into life in Year 6 with ease. There have been so many highlights this term; publishing our writing, gaining confidence in maths, bikeability and chemistry with cabbage to name a few.
In English, we have focused on aspects of SPaG. We began by refreshing our memories on expanded noun phrases, modal verbs and parenthesis. An expanded noun phrase is a descriptive phrase made up of a noun and one or more adjective. Modal verbs are helping verbs that indicate likelihood, ability, permission, or obligation. Parenthesis is a way of adding extra information to a sentence that is not essential to its main meaning, it can be a word, a phrase, or a clause and is separated from the rest of the sentence by pairs of brackets, commas or dashes.
In Maths, we continued our learning on long division, consolidating it by solving multi-step problems. Multi-step problems are problems that require more than one step to solve. We finished the week by focusing on the order of operations which a collection of rules that gives the correct sequence of steps for doing a calculation.
We were lucky enough to perform alongside Rev. Sandi in our collective worship this week. Rev. Sandi brought to story of David of life. David started life as a shepherd-boy. He quickly grew into a brave teenager who protected his flock from hungry lions. His great skill with a catapult helped him defeat a giant called Goliath even when all the King’s soldiers were too scared to fight. He was very musical, playing a harp, the nearest thing they had in those days to a guitar. He wrote poems and songs and some of them are still read and sung today! You can find them in an Old Testament book of the Bible called Psalms. David was best friends with the King’s son Jonathan, even though the King didn’t like him, and was kind and respectful to the King (Saul) even when Saul attacked him! Even though he was young and not very tall, God could see that on the inside he was bold and full of faith. So, he was chosen to be the King of Israel.
In RE, we discussed what a pilgrimage is and why people go on them. We thought carefully about whether their journey needed to be to a place of worship or a place of significance. After researching a Jewish and Muslim pilgrimage, we compared them with a Christian journey. We found out that The Holy Land is a place of pilgrimage for Christians, Jews and Muslims.
In PSHE, we identified a range of feelings and when we might feel this way. We discussed that everyone's brain is different and what we experience and respond to may be different to other people. We then talked about how when we get older, we may start liking people in a different way and want to spend time with someone we are interested in - we found out this is called a crush. Some people have crushes on people of the same sex or the opposite sex. Mrs T, told us that her daughter had a crush on Harry Styles and that it is was ok to have a crush on famous people too! Finally, we looked at different scenarios and had to figure out whether we thought the touch was appropriate, inappropriate or in some cases illegal. We were very mature and had an in-depth discussion about each scenario.
In P.E, this week we recapped on inside and outside hook turns, drag back turns and some children challenged us with other turns. We then applied this in lots of different games and then in matches at the end.
We also continued our amazing Bible timeline in art, we added fine detail over the watercolour with oil pastels. They look absolutely brilliant!
We hope you all enjoy a restful break and look forward to welcoming everyone back after the half term.
