Year 6 w/b 20.01.25

Date: 23rd Jan 2025 @ 2:11pm

What a great week we've had in Year 6, we've tasted food that would have been eaten during WW2, planned diary entries and even became playground leaders!

In English, we began to plan our diary entry for a day in the life of Rose Blanche. We tried really hard to think of Rose’s sense of justice and compassion. She felt a sense of foreboding when she saw a little boy who tried to escape from the truck being grabbed and led back to the soldiers by the fierce-looking Mayor.  We tried to capture how Rose felt as we planned our diaries, of course remembering that a diary should be written in past tense and in chronological order.

In Maths, we started our unit on ratio.  A ratio shows how much of one thing there is compared to another.  Ratios are usually written in the form:  a:b.  If you are making orange squash and you mix one-part orange to four parts water, then the ratio of orange to water will be 1:4 (1 to 4).  We found out that the order in which a ratio is stated is important. Changing the order of the numbers in a ratio changes the proportions.

We were very lucky to receive training from Mr George from Congleton High school.  He taught us how to lead games for the younger children in our school. We had such fun learning and enjoying time together playing the team games.  We are all now official Playground Leaders! 😊

For our unit on WW2, we have been talking about the impact on Britain and how life changed once the war began. Today we have looked at rationing and what food was available during the war. We have tasted some wartime recipes and seen the amounts of food that would have been available each week. It was not a lot!
They would have eaten lots of vegetables as these would have been available if you could grow your own, meat and other items such as eggs were also rationed. Some people would have made cakes without eggs, this was one of the recipes we tried, it was delicious!

In PSHE, we discussed what a habit was and whether they can be good or bad.
We then created a mind map of negative habits such as vaping, taking drugs or drinking or gambling. Habits can som,,etimes lead to addictions which affect our health - we will continue to talk about this next lesson.

Homework is due in for Monday please (pages 47,48 and 49)

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
