Year 6 w.b: 16.09.24

Date: 20th Sep 2024 @ 12:58pm

We have had a wonderful week in Year 6, it has been filled with learning formal and informal speech, continuing to improve our place value knowledge and using textiles to create our dioramas.

In Maths, we began the week by rounding integers; we reminded ourselves that If digit is less than 5, we replace it and all the digits to its right with zeros and leave the round-off digit unchanged.  If it is 5 or larger, replace it and all the digits to its right with zeros. Increase the round-off digit by 1.  We then went on to look at negative number, we learnt that a negative number is a number whose value is always less than zero and it has a minus (-) sign before it. On a number line, negative numbers are represented on the left side of zero. For example, -6 and -15 are negative numbers.  We really enjoyed figuring out temperatures in different cities around the world.

In English, we enjoyed writing setting descriptions.  The setting of a story is where and when it takes place and usually tells the reader how it looks and feels, so they can imagine it in their minds.  We thought carefully about the language we used to describe the “frying hot” Galapagos Islands where Darwin first landed.  We also looked at examples of formal and informal speech from the text; we chose a piece of formal text and tried changing it to informal.

In Spanish, we tried improving our Spanish pronunciation by saying the alphabet - El alphabeto espanol. We then played a little quiz; we had to spell names by writing each letter we heard down.

In Art we learnt that collage is an art form that involves arranging and gluing different materials together to create a masterpiece. Textiles are materials, such as cloth or woven fabric. We began our dioramas (which are replica 3D scenes or models) by creating a background suitable for our 'Darwin' theme. We had great fun exploring the different types of collage materials.

In Computing, we used the Scratch programme and tried ‘Brute Force Hacking’ to try to create a code to hack a 4-digit password.  Brute force hacking requires plenty of patience because it may take months or even years for an attacker to successfully crack a password or encryption key.  We learnt that the best way to defend against brute force attacks that target passwords is to make passwords as tough as possible to crack.

In P.E, we were passing accurately with speed and controlling the ball quickly to return it to a team mate. We played 4 v1 and 3 v2 games in order to pass quickly to our team mates and then we put this into practise with a match at the end without goalkeepers and where we could only score by passing it into the net.

In our reflection task after worship, we worked collaboratively to put together a jigsaw. Mrs Wood explained that school is like a jigsaw, everyone needs to work together in order to succeed and flourish. If we have a missing piece, it just won't work; we all agreed we need to include everyone to help our school be a better place.

In R.E, we listened to Bishop Philip sharing his thoughts on journeys Christians make. He told us that during Christian celebrations, we share thanks and Christians prepare for our life journeys by being Christened in church. Christian's know that people sin and Jesus dealt with this by dying on the cross. Bishop Philip explained that when we die, death is destroyed and is a gateway to new life with God in heaven.  We then discussed 'A day in the life of a Christian' and the 'Life journey of a Christian'. Following this, we had a very lengthy discussion about why people become Christians in later life and the difference between practising and non-practising Christians.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
