Hot on the heels of World Book Day/Week was another themed week in school: Science Week. This was kicked off with a visit from Mr McDonald, aka Fin's dad, who works as a Director of Customer Success for Adaptiva. As someone who works in technology, he represents the 'T' in STEM and spoke of coding, software engineering, the Cloud, bandwidth, battleships (real ones!), game design, app design, military projects and even spies! When asked about career paths, his advice was 'Do something you enjoy...it's all about taking opportunities'.
On Tuesday, we welcomed Mrs Winward who put the A in STEAM for us- a Science world with an Artisitic view on things. She spoke of how she chose a broad range of subjects she enjoyed through school, not knowing where they would lead and now works for Jacobs, a global company with a great breadth of projects from electric cars to designing Tim Peake's spacesuit!
We conducted 2 mini-experiments. The first to investigate different types of worms (3) and where to find them and the other to see what kind of soil we have and therefore what type of geology we are sat on top of.
We have been looking at the abstract world of Henry Moore, observing objects and sketching the shapes they are made up of. Next week, we will be furthering this with looking at Barbara Hepworth's equally abstract sculptures. To compliment that, our studies into Early Islamic Civilisation led us to the artwork of the time with its geometrical repeated patterns, designed inspired by vegetation and the beautiful calligraphy within early copies of the Koran.
It was a beautiufl spring day when we walked down to church to meet Rev Sandi and discover how the idea of rescue, redemption and salvation is represented in the architecture and design of the church. We considered why the font was at the door of the church, how taking Holy Communion can wash away sin and saw thw Eastertime artwork of the Stations of the Cross.
