Year 6 w.b: 14.10.24

Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 1:46pm

Year 6 has been jam-packed with brilliance this week.  We had the pleasure of listening to Will talk about the science of flourishing and being the best we can be and enjoyed Chemistry with Cabbage, where we tested several chemicals and even made carbon dioxide by mixing vinegar and baking soda.  It was such fun!

We had the most amazing science day to begin our week.  We tested several chemicals: soap solution, vinegar, cleaner, sugar solution, lemon juice and washing soda. We added a red cabbage solution to each chemical to test the result. We found out which chemical was an acid, a neutral or an alkali by the colour the solution turned.

In Maths, we took on the challenge of long division.  The long division method is used when you are dividing a large number (usually three digits or more) by a two-digit (or more) number. It is set out in a similar way to short division (the 'bus stop' method).   It did appear daunting at first, but we quickly realised it was a great way of breaking down complex division calculations into a series of more manageable steps.  The phrase ‘I love long division’ was even heard in the classroom (twice!)  Yay!

In English, we continued to write our animal adaptation explanations.  An explanation text is a piece of non-fiction writing explaining an action process or event in a detailed way, in our case how animals can adapt to their environments.  We sectioned off our writing into shorter planned paragraphs in order to add greater detail to our writing.  We are sure you will enjoy reading our explanations as soon as we have published them.

Year 5 and 6 had the most amazing morning with Will, he explained to us that we are all brilliant and how we can change and be positive.  We had such fun creating our very own meet and greet handshakes, our smiles were absolutely beaming from ear to ear. Reticular Activating System - Our brain takes a mental picture of things we see from day to day. Will told us that sometimes we don't process everything and sometimes there are things going on that we just don't notice. We can, however, reactivate our RAS by talking and bringing things to the forefront of our minds.                                                                                                          Beach Ball Thinking - Will explained that people see different things and from an alternative perspective. Will showed us several optical illusions; he explained it tried to confuse our mind and we can only see one image at a time. 'We see what we think we're going to get' and it takes 30 days to re-train our reticular activating system, we can thrive by changing our thoughts.  We then discussed the 'Level of Positivity' that explains how our happiness works. Will surprised us by saying there is a 2% club - 2% of the population stand out and embrace the unknown. We wrote our own score of happy we are and how fulfilled we are.  Finally, we had to think about twenty things that we take for granted, we wrote water, education, food etc.  We finished our first session by thinking of our positives and our behaviours.

In Art, we created the most beautiful watercolour prayers in the style of Hannah Dunnett.  Christian artist Hannah Dunnett produces exquisite artwork intertwined with religious texts.  We have to admit though; our artwork rivalled the famous artists drawings.  Simply amazing!

Bikeability, this week has helped us learn practical skills and understand how to cycle on today’s roads.  It gave everyone the confidence to cycle and enjoy this skill for life.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend and let it roll in with happiness and joy.
