Year 6 w.b: 09.12.24

Date: 13th Dec 2024 @ 3:26pm

We have had yet another great week in Year 6, it has been filled with writing newspaper reports, finding fractions of amounts and investigating the prophets and how they relate to the story of Christmas.

In Maths, we learnt how to find fractions of an amount.  We used bar models to help us work out the calculations.  Using images to help break up the fraction can be a helpful and visual way of finding a fraction of an amount.  We had to remember to think of the bar as a whole divided into equal pieces.

In English, we planned our newspaper reports and began to write them just like journalists.  Newspapers are designed to share important information with people about what is going on in the world.  The first paragraph should contain all of the 5Ws - what, where, when, who and why.  Each paragraph should give more detail about the story and be presented in a clear way.  Direct and indirect/reported speech can be used to show the what other people have said about the story.  We learnt that we needed to add facts or statistics to support our points and avoid using your own opinion.  We also needed to use formal language and avoid chatty, friendly language as it should be written to inform people.  We also ensured we wrote the main part of the report in the past as the event has already happened.

In R.E, we explored advent.  For Christians, advent is a time of preparation, this means that Christians prepare for Jesus and spend time in church.  We then investigated what the prophets did and how the Christmas story and the life of Jesus reflected the prophecies.

In P.E, we enjoyed a quick game of football after practising our passing and stopping skills.  It was great fun!

In Computing, we had the pleasure of Livvy and Hannah again to help us use and program BBC micro:bits.  We learnt how to drag and drop the code blocks onto the workspace to create our code.

We also thought carefully about what the true meaning of Christmas really is, we said of course it is found in the humility and love of the Christ child, born in a manger,  destined to bring light to the darkness. We thought a bit more about this and said we thought the true meaning was also peace and hope, with that in mind, we watched the Christmas truce of 1914, hundreds of soldiers stopped fighting one another, left their trenches and shook hands in no man’s land.  We learnt Silent Night in German and sang in harmony to mark the true meaning of Christmas.

We hope you all have a wonderful, peaceful weekend.
