Year 6
We have had an extremely busy week; the highlight being showing you all our wonderful work and how we learn in school.
We are incredibly proud of the confidence shown by the children as they explained their area of the curriculum.
Thank you to everyone who joined us!
In Maths, we began our algebra unit. Algebra uses symbols (usually letters such as x or y) to replace numbers. We call this symbol the unknown or the variable and it is our job to find out the value of this symbol. In an equation, both sides must always be equal. For example: x-2 = 4. To solve this we need to work out the value of x. So, we can see that x minus 2 is equal to 4 and we know that the value of x is going to be 2 bigger than 4. So, in this example x=6 which is the same as 4 plus 2. To begin with we completed function machines and had to calculate the outputs and then find the missing functions.
In English, we thought a little bit more about Rose Blanche and how the character showed courage during the difficult times in the war. We gathered ideas to write a bravery speech about the significant events and the effects the war had on Rose. We said Rose was tremendously brave because she put others before herself.
In Art, we applied the four rules of shading: shading in one direction, creating smooth, neat, even tones, leaving no gaps and ensuring neat edges when filling a shape. We used these four rules to sketch and improve our original WW2 aeroplane drawings. They are pretty amazing even if we do say so ourselves!
In Forest School, we toasted delicious marshmallows on the log fire and used the flint and steel tools to strike a spark. We held the piece of flint in our left hands and the steel in our right and then brought the steel to the flint. This makes the sparks go upwards. Mr Simmons explained it is an essential bush craft activity to learn to start a fire safely in the correct setting.
Homework due in for Monday please: Pages 54 and TTRS.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
