Year 5: Welcome back to year 5

Date: 20th Sep 2015 @ 5:08pm

Welcome back to another school year.

Over the coming weeks year 5 will be going over place value skills, involving the four calculations (x - + ÷) and problem solving in maths.

In English we have spent the first couple of weeks looking at the poem 'the Nightmail' by WH Auden. The children have looked at features in the poem, as well as performing it and writing their own poem in the style of the Nightmail. Next week we will be moving on to a modern fairy tale called ''Princess' Blankets'.

In topic the children have looked at the lives of poor Victorian children, writing a diary extract in the life of a working child. As well as this, we have looked at key monarchs since 1066, as well as looking at the life of a famous Victorian artist called William Morris. Last week year 5 drew and used watercolour paints to make a picture in the style of Morris, a Victorian renowned for his use of floral patterns.

Year 5 will be visiting Barclays Techology Centre in Radbroke hall on the 1st October. This will be a great opportunity to see the work that is done at Barclays. Children will be given a tour of the building, followed by activities related to the tour. Later in the term (27th November) we will also be visting Blist Hill Victorian Town, which will be a fantastic opportunity to really empathise with what it was like to live in the Victorian era. I have arranged a workshop in a Victorian school, where the children will be provided with a costume from Blist Hill and be given the chance to experience life in school! I am really looking forward to both visits and feel year 5 will get a lot out of both experiences.

If you would like to support your child at home, encouraging reading at least three times a week is recommended, as well as practicing any spelling homework. Children will have literacy homework on Mondays, due in on Wednesday; maths homework is given out on Wednesday and due back on Friday. Going over place value skills would be useful for your child at home to consolidate what we do in school.

It has been a pleasure meeting some of you over the last couple of weeks and I look forward to meeting more of you over the coming weeks. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
