Year 5 WC 9th September 2024

Date: 13th Sep 2024 @ 4:09pm

We've had a wonderful first full week in Year 5 starting our new timetable. Since coming back to school we have really been concentrating on being 'ready, respectful and safe' around school and having high expectations of behaviour at all times. In our first week, the children discussed what these mean and have been trying incredibly hard to put these into practice.

In Maths we have continued with place value. We have been working with numbers up to 1,000,000 understanding what each of the digits mean, how to read and write them and adding/subtracting 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000. I know that some children have found the homework a little tricky this week. We will go through the answers together on Monday and address any misconceptions they have had.

We started our English unit this week focusing on the story Henry Box Brown who escaped from slavery by mailing himself to Pennsylvania. In our writing this week, we explored Henry's feelings at different points in his life. We then discussed how people react when they feel different emotions. Next week, we'll look at how we can use this in our writing.

In history, we learnt about what it means to be an enslaved person. We looked at different images of slavery and discussed what we could learn from these.

In RE, we have been looking at the importance of the Bible. This week, we discussed the different names of Bibles such as 'The Holy Book', 'The New Light' and 'The Good News Bible' and what their names suggest about what Christians believe.

PSHE has taught the class about the importance of collaboration, and in groups the children were asked to make the largest free standing tower out of newspaper.

In Science, we have been learning about reproduction in mammals and looking at the differences between marsupials, monotremes and placentals.

Finally, in computing we learnt that not all websites can be trusted. The children explored a website on the Pacific Northwestern tree octopus - a very rare and endangered animal. And very fictional!

On Monday we have our first Singfest rehearsal which I'm sure the children will really enjoy. We are also walking to church on Thursday leaving school at 10am if any parents would like to join us.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.
