Year 5 WC 4th March 2024

Date: 8th Mar 2024 @ 1:44pm

What a busy week we’ve had in Year 5!

In English, we have been exploring our model text, a newspaper report about Philippe Petit walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We looked at new vocabulary and then picked out the features of the text. Next week we will start planning and writing out own newspaper report about his walk between the Twin Towers.

In Maths we have been measuring and calculating perimeter of rectangles, rectilinear shapes and polygons. In our First Things First tasks (this is the work we do as we come into school before registration) we have been recapping the four operations.

In geography we have been learning about the human impact on the physical geography of China. We looked at the positive and negative effects tourism is having on Mount Everest and then we learnt about desertification which is how areas of grassland are turning into desert because of over farming.

In our Mini Medics session Mr Aspinall talked about different types of leadership and how to be a good leader. Then we put some of these leadership skills into practice outside while completing some group challenges.

Yesterday was World Book Day. We started the day by watching a video from Karen Winward, our Patron of Reading, who talked to us about the process of writing and publishing your own book. We had a great discussion about why reading is so important with the children coming up with lots of ideas. Then we joined with our Year 3 reading buddies and shared our favourite books from home. In the afternoon, we designed National Book Tokens thinking about what we enjoy reading, where we read and when.

Thank you to everyone who came on Thursday to our meeting about Conway. For anyone that wasn’t able to attend, the Powerpoint can be found on our class page. Please can Form Cs and the medical consent form be returned to school before Friday 15th March. If you have any questions about the trip, please come and speak to us.

The week has ended on a high. In forest school we worked in groups to make a symbol showing what we thought was the most important part of the Easter story and then visited the spring gift room, made Mothering Sunday cards and continued with our art focussing on Salvadore Dali. We have been pleased with the improvements in behaviour since our conversations earlier in the week and thank you for your continued support.
