Year 5 WC 3rd June
Date: 8th Jun 2024 @ 12:09pm
I hope you all had a lovely half term. I can't believe we're in our final half term of year 5 and what a busy few weeks we have coming up!
We started the week with our English hook lesson where got into the mindset of Bear Grylls with his interactive television programme and helped to make decisions about what he should do. We also thought about what he would pack in his rucksack when going on an expedition. Next we looked at some illustrations from our text, The Lost Book of Adventure, and made some predictions about the story. As always, the children did not disappoint with their imaginative ideas! Over the next couple of days, we wrote some mini stories using the pictures as inspiration focusing on using adverbials to make our paragraphs cohesive.
In Maths we finished our unit on position and direction using coordinates to describe the position of a shape after a reflection. Then we have started our next topic, decimals where we have been adding and subtracting decimals within 1 and finding complements to 1.
Mr Aspinall will be teaching PE again this half term and this time we're focusing on athletics. This week the children learnt how to sprint including how to accelerate and maintain speed.
The children had lots of fun in computing with Mrs Tice on Wednesday tinkering with a new piece of software called Micro:bit. Their objective this week was to 'tinker' and get to know the software ready for next week when they will learn how to program an animation.
We have noticed that reading at home appears to have dropped off a little over the last half term so we are reminding children that the expectation is to read at home at least three times per week. This needs to be recorded in their planners, which can be done by the children themselves; just ask a parent to sign it at the end of the week. Reading lays the foundation of academic success and fosters a lifelong love of learning. Not only does reading improve their vocabulary, comprehension and writing skills but supports their performance in all subjects.
Thank you for your continued support. Hope you have a lovely weekend.
