Year 5 WC 30th September

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 5:36pm

Hello everyone!

It is so nice to report on another terrific week in Year 5, with some really good learning, excellent behaviour and a good dollop of fun too!

Maths has led us back towards addition and subtraction this week. A good refresher on the essential skills but with a little more challenge with the size of numbers. Blowing the cobwebs of the need to exchange when subtracting was certainly worth doing. We finished the week with rounding numbers - a skill that definitely requires practice but is such a valuable one once it is mastered.

We have launched our new topic of Forces in Science this week and started learning about the effect of gravity on a range of unsupported objects, and how forces usually go together in opposing pairs. We also learned the importance difference between mass and weight, so be prepared to be asked how much your 'mass' is this weekend!

In History, to show their understanding of what it was like to be a slave they role-played and created freeze frames of the different stages from being captured in Africa, travelling across the Middle Passage and daily life as an enslaved person.

As I am sure you are aware by now, the children are starting to learn their songs that they will be performing at SingFest this year, and there's quite a few familiar tunes to really bring the enthusiasm into their 'rehersals'. One of our arrangements has a weather theme, so 'Umbrella', 'Walking on Sunshine', 'One Day Like This', 'Here Comes The Sun' and Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' are certainly worth adding to a playlist at home if they want a little extra exposure or practice.

In PSHE-we discussed what makes a healthy relationship (trust, respect, knowing each other, being kind etc etc) and what makes an unhealthy relationship. What should they do if a relationship makes them feel worried or unsafe? They all understood they could talk to a trusted adult.

Finally, earlier this week, Mrs Taylor taught a 'bonus' Art lesson in preparation for our Open Morning - we will try and include some photos below to show off their efforts.

We hope you all have a great weekend!
