Year 5 WC 23rd September 2024

Date: 28th Sep 2024 @ 10:18am

Year 5 have been working incredibly hard this week. In English, we have been using emotive language to write diary entries from the point of view Henry Brown. Henry was a slave during the Atlantic Slave Trade and experienced some very difficult times in his life. However, he is known for mailing himself to Pennsylvania where he was finally free. We have then planned and started writing a diary about a young girl who finds a runaway slave. We created a toolkit for writing a diary so the children have been working hard to include these features in their work.

In Maths, we have completed our unit on place value and have started addition and subtraction. This week, we looked at mental methods such as partitioning using their understanding of place value to help them.

On Monday we finally started our Singfest rehearsals after a few technical difficulties last week. Victoria showed us some ways to warm up our voices and introduced some playground games which teach the children to internalise rhythm.

In history we looked at how we know about the treatment of slaves. We read some recounts from people who were enslaved and heard about their harrowing experiences such as living in wooden shacks, being forced to work from 4am until late at night and how they were beaten by their masters.

In their final lesson on plant and animals reproduction in Science, we looked at the life cycle of birds. Investigating inside an unfertilised egg was a useful way of understanding the role that each part of the egg plays in protecting and nourishing the embryo. Cracking an egg without breaking it was a skill yet to be mastered however! We ended our unit by looking at the unique behaviour of the male seahorse- one of the very few living things that has the male species becoming 'pregnant' and 'giving birth' to around 2000 baby seahorses.

In our RE lessons this term we have been learning about the Bible and how Christians use the Bible in their lives. Mrs Wood visited our class on Monday to talk to us about how her faith is important to her and how she uses to Bible to be a better person and be the best headteacher that she can. Although she doesn't read the Bible from start to finish, she reads lots of Christian books which come from the Bible and the stories help to guide her and reflect on how she can be better.

Mr Simmons has spoken to the children about coming to Forest School prepared as we still have lots of children coming without a change of footwear. Please can children make sure they have wellies or walking boots every Thursday especially as with the wet weather, it can be very muddy. Also, we are asking children to bring a change of trousers to wear over their school ones (preferrably waterproof but joggers are also fine). We are wanting to prevent a possible contamination from mud on footwear and clothing coming into school in order to protect a member of our school community.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
