Year 5 WC 22nd April 2024
Date: 26th Apr 2024 @ 2:31pm
We've had such a busy week in Year 5. On Wednesday we went to St Oswalds for a very special service to celebrate Mrs Pulle. It was a lovely way to thank her for everything she has done for Brereton and wish her well on her next adventures in Devon with her family.
In Maths, we have completed our unit on graphs. The children have been learning how to read and interpret line graphs, tables and timetables. Time was a little tricky for some as they needed to understand the 24 hour clock so if you'd like to support at home, please keep practising at telling the time (particularly the 12 and 24 hour clock).
In English we have started to read our text, King Kong, which the children are really enjoying and are always looking forward to the next instalment! We have been exploring some new (and quite difficult) vocabulary using Word Hippo to find definitions and look for synonyms. Today we have been looking at cohesion and how we can make our writing flow.
On Tuesday, we continued with our Young Leaders programme. The children discussed the issues in the world that they wanted to change or improve. We had so many ideas such as wanting peace, improving services for people who need help with their mental health, helping people who are lonely in our community and wanting an end to poverty. Next we discussed what great leadership looks like. We created a list of skills that we thought were important in a leader and as a class we ranked them from most-least important. They chose:
- a good communicator
- someone who upholds the rules
- a decision maker
- a peacemaker
- someone who is supportive
The children should have also come home with a Challenge Grid. We are encouraging the children to complete one from the grid this week. Throughout the award, they will need to do at least 5. I'm looking forward to hearing what they have been doing next week- we'll be sharing these in class on Tuesday.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
