Year 5 WC 18th November 2024

Date: 21st Nov 2024 @ 2:27pm

We had a very exciting start of the week with the arrival of the snow! The children had lots of fun at breaktime playing in the snow, having snowball fights and building a snowman. However, the snow hasn't stopped us from working hard in the classroom! In English, we have been very impressed with the children's writing as we have been planning and writing an exploration narrative about landing on Mars. Throughout this unit we have been learning some new grammar and punctuation as well as recapping learning from last year such as using parenthesis with dashes, creating expanded noun phrases and punctuating direct speech. We've been practising these in our daily sentence accuracy tasks and it's been really good to see this now starting to be applied in their independent writing. Next week, the children are very excited to publish their work.

In Maths, we have started our next unit on fractions. We have spent lots of time focusing on equivalent fractions ensuring the children understand what this means using drawing and jottings to demonstrate this.

On Tuesday afternoon, the class had a very enjoyable afternoon replicating Jackson Pollock's drip painting. Inspired by our English topic, they created space backgrounds by flicking various colours of paint onto a black backdrop.

In RE, we continued looking at the different stories of Jesus's birth in Matthew and Luke and then we looked at how these influence the songs we sing at Christmas. We explored the lyrics of carols such as O Little Town of Bethlehem, Silent Night and Once in Royal David's City, identifying which stories the words come from. We then considered how these stories influence our Christmas celebrations and we designed Christmas tree decorations to reflect this.

Today we have had our Zoom Singfest rehearsal with Victoria from Love Music Trust. The children have been practising their weather themed songs before a face to face rehearsal in January and our concert at Congleton Town Hall in March. More details about this will follow in a few weeks. This weekend, the children will bring home their copies of the words so that they can practise.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.
