Year 5 WC 17th June
Date: 20th Jun 2024 @ 9:21am
We've had lots going on in Year 5 with Sports Week this week. We had our usual PE lesson on Tuesday with Mr Aspinall where we focused on long jump. The children learnt about how their muscles go short/long when they bend their knees (short), stretch out during the jump (long) and then land (short again). They practised a standing long jump and measured their personal bests. Then practised jumping by doing sack races and jumping two feet to two feet over hurdles. In gymnastics, we looked at rolls this week and the new one we learnt was a T roll. The childre put their jumps from last week and rolls from this lesson into a sequence.
On Wednesday, Mr McAulay organised a sports morning where the children took part in lots of different sports including athletics, rounders, boccia, yoga, footgolf and netball. They had lots of fun experiencing some new sports and trying new skills.
In art, the children learnt about the artists Jean-Jacques Caffieri, a French sculptor. This week they did some research about her and learnt about how she was inspired by the organic shapes, textures and colours of natural forms such as fruit and vegetables. In the second part of their lesson, the children worked on their sketching techniques by sketching half of King Kong using different gradients of pencils. They practised adding tone- tone is the word we use to describe light and dark, or light and shadows.
In English, we have been writing character descriptions thinking about the explorer in our story. We tried to show what his character was like through his actions. Then we have planned our survival narratives ready to start writing our stories next week.
In Maths we have been continuing with decimals. They have been learning how to multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.
