Year 5 WC 16th September 2024
Date: 20th Sep 2024 @ 12:39pm
We've had another lovely week in Year 5. In English we have been exploring emotive language and using this in our diary writing. I have been so impresse with their enthusiasm and they are all trying so hard to produce their best work.
On Monday we should have had our first Singfest rehearsal but unfortunately technical problems meant we weren't able to join the zoom call. However, we now have all the resources so at some point next week we will begin practising the songs. The children will have their own copy of the lyrics and I'll upload some of the music so they can practice at home. For those that may not be aware of what Singfest is, it is a school project run by Love Music Trust. Over the next few months we learn two medleys along the theme of 'It's a Wonderful World' featuring songs such as 'Walking on Sunshine' and 'Big Yellow Taxi'. Victoria from LMT will deliver some more online rehearsals as well as a session in school too. Then around March time, we join with some other schools to perform at Congleton Town Hall. We've been doing this for several years with our year 5 classes and every year it is a great success.
In Maths we have been continuing with place value looking at partitioning numbers, numberlines up to 1,000,000 and comparing/ordering numbers. We used beadstrings to make our own number lines and used post-it notes to label the intervals. Next week will be our final week on place value before we start looking at addition and subtraction.
In history we learnt about the triangular slave trade. The children learnt about the different countries involved, what each of them had and what they wanted. For example, the Americas had the climate to grow desirable crops such as sugar cane and tobacco (which Europe wanted) but they needed a workforce and Africa had a huge population which they could use for this.
In RE we discovered how long it can take to translate the BIble (over 20 years in some cases!) We discussed how we were inspired by the Bible translators who showed great determination and perseverance, and what it means to Christians to be able to read the Bible in their own language.
Yesterday, Mr Cotton, Mrs Forrester and Mrs Gleave took the children to church for our first class worship. Rev. Sandi was very impressed with their behaviour and Mrs Forrester commented on what a delight the children were. Well done, Year 5!
