Year 5 WC 14th March 2022

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 1:33pm

This week in Year 5 we have been exploring what it means to be a refugee as part of our No Outsiders lessons. After learning what a refugee is, where they come from and who helps them, the children discussed what they thought their biggest challenges were. They demontrated great empathy and understanding of the difficulties they had faced and continue to face, such as the trauma of what they had experienced, the challenges of finding a new job and earning a living, finding somewhere to live, being accepted and being made to feel welcome in a different country and learnning a new language. Next we talked about what 'home' means to us, such as somewhere warm and sheltered but also somewhere we feel loved, safe and where we can be ourselves. These ideas led us to write some poetry using the idea of a recipe. Here are a few snippets of the children's work:

Create a shelter

Crack in some comfy cushions

A place to call your own

Sprinkle generously with warmth

Stir some relaxation and some happy memories

By Harry

Create love and hope

Build a wall of resilience

Open opportunities

Slip in some education

Believe in yourself and stay strong

By Bethany

Clean the table of its worries

Mix in a dash of love

Create a safe home

Crush some teddies and toys

Sprinkle generously with memories and happiness

By Leila

Sieve in some hope and loving memories

Twist some laughs and faith together

Believe that you can have trust

Refresh books for bundles of joy

Scatter friendship to those who need it

By Ellie

Creating a shelter,

They need a cosy welcome,

A place to call home.

Add a pinch of comfort, dry and warm,

Enjoy your time and no longer be forlorn

In Maths we have completed our assessments this week. The children have worked so hard, showing belief in themselves and each other. I'm really proud of how they have approached these with such determination and resilience. Next week we'll be continuing with our work on fractions, focusing on subtracting mixed numbers.

This week in RE we have been looking at reasons why Jesus died and how these reasons are depicted in works of art. We also read some fictional scenarios to understand why Jesus’ sacrifice is still relevant in the lives of Christians today.

For British Science Week, the children took part in a fun activity, creating creatures that could survive on Mars. As a class, we researched what the surface of Mars is like, and what specific adaptations animals would need to live on the planet. We then used this information to design our own unique creatures, before actually making them out of play-doh! I was impressed with the thought and detail that went into creating each individual creature. Well done Year 5!

In PSHE we continued looking at the theme of forgiveness. We began by looking at optical illusions and discussing as a class what we saw in each image. It was interesting to see that we all saw the images differently and had differing opinions on what the image actually represented. We discussed how this linked to arguments that we may have with our friends, and agreed that each side may see the argument differently, depending on their own perspective. Following this, we had a go at some role play exercises to understand how it is important for us to look at both sides of the argument and try to see it from the other persons point of view.

In geography we have been learning about China. Last week we learnt about the impact humans are having on the physical geography. We learnt about the positives and negatives of tourism around Mount Everest and then we looked at what desertification was. We learnt about the effects of this on the land and how this impacts on the people who live there. Today the children have been learning about China's economic growth and its effect on the country. We learnt about the positive impact in that it is has created jobs reducing poverty. However the other side of this is that more and more people are moving to China for work, meaning that it is becoming very overcrowded. In additon, cities have had to build more power stations to provide electricity for all the new factories, which has a big environmental impact.

I'm really looking forward to speaking to you all next week for parent consultations. If you haven't made an appointment, please send me a message on Dojo as I still have some slots available.

Have a lovely weekend
