Year 5 WC 13th January 2025

Date: 17th Jan 2025 @ 3:52pm

Hello everyone,

Our first five-day week in nearly a month has come to an end and the children have really impressed us with their hard work, enthusiasm and desire to learn.

Maths this week has been around multiplication, initially 2 digits by 1 digit, but now moving on to 2 digits by 2 digits (e.g. 34 x 16). They have learned two methods for calculations, but we will be aiming to secure the column method with them during this unit. As always with maths, times table knowledge is really useful so we do continue to encourage regular practice on TT Rockstars.

In English, the children have been writing their character descriptions along the theme of our text, The Hound of the Baskervilles - lots of tremendously dark vocabulary being used to describe how Holmes or Watson felt during a passage of the text.

We launched our science topic on Earth & Space this week, looking at the eight planets in our solar system, the differences between them and using research to produce some great solar system posters.

Space has also been the subject of our computing unit this term - looking particularly at the NASA Mars Rover, Curiosity - and we will be exploring how data is sent using binary code in the next few weeks.

Finally, our RE day on Monday saw the children learn about, dramatise and then write modern interpretations of some of the parables from the Bible. We had a visitor in the class on Tuesday as part of our preparation for SIAMS inspection next year, and she was very impressed with the knowledge and attitude of the whole class during the lesson.

We hope that you have a great weekend and will see you all again next week!
